Disclaimer: not fatui or anyone else in this thread

But like... because you don't reverse demoralization with data? The playerbase, for whatever reason, has become largely demoralized when it comes to entering fest skin contests. This data proves that the FR team needs to do something about that feeling, but the raw data alone is not going to light a fire under anyone who feels crushed by how cutthroat the skin/accent scene is, an anxiety and frustration that comes out in fest contests.

888's own data proves what CAN be done to help people feel less demoralized--look at the bump in entries for Rockbreaker's when it was suddenly way more worth it to enter.

NAYRT
it's like 888 said though:
"For everyone else: By repeating the myth that staff only picks constant winners, that new artists don't have a chance at all, that there's constant favoritism - you're driving hate toward winners and also discouraging new artists from even trying. Don't you see how telling artists that they have almost no chance against repeat winners in the face of very real numbers saying otherwise, is a defeatist attitude that hurts everybody?

I really want to see people take a minute and consider what they're trying to accomplish when they repeat this misconception. It is entirely damaging to almost everyone who hears it, especially people who then incorporate it into their belief system and repeat it to other people.

At the very least, I think a wider trend of being informed and people not repeating misconceptions that there's no room for new artists would help. It's just defeatism at that point."

like we can very easily help people stop feeling demoralized by not repeating something that's objectively been debunked and encouraging them to look at how many first time winners there are instead

People could believe first time winners win every time and it's only going to solve like 20% of why the entry numbers have dropped. Again, see 888's data--Rockbreaker's had a spike in entries because it was worth it to enter, even if you thought the same people were going to win. FR staff needs to fix this by making the contests more flashy, more worth it, more varied. You cannot depend on the playerbase to take things on faith and stop feeling demoralized when materially nothing changes with the contests.

thats very true, it just shouldn't be on the community to provide incentive to enter skin contests like this. I hope fr staff sees the thread and it gets some gears turning in their heads

Fully agree it should be on staff, not the playerbase! Honestly I wish staff were more communicative with the playerbase in general. I miss words on the wind and colouring contests.

SA: like if someone has been feeling sad and defeated because making skins and accents is a lot of work and it feels like they're wasting their time making fest entries because they don't get picked, showing them data that actually first timers get picked all the time and they're wrong to feel the way they do isn't going to make them go oh, awesome, I'll keep entering! It's going to make them feel stupid. And that will make them dig their heels in and double down.

The discussions in the thread about why the entries are declining--it's a complex issue--are likely to be way more effective than just scolding someone for feeling down because the data says something else. If hard data fixed things we wouldn't be staring down WW3 in the real world.

"way more worth it to enter" and then august and mv decided to go through the submissions and just not pay the promised amount if they decided your skin wasn't earth enough. i know a lot of people who they claimed weren't actually trying and don't make skins anymore because they found that demoralizing...

I have no way of judging what happened there because I didn't know anyone who entered. However, the outcome of two players running something doesn't mean it's not a good lesson for FR staff, who can be a lot more consistent in how they hand out entry prizes/incentives!

(frozen comment) Re: Fest Skin Submission Decline

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
of course they were going to filter out the entries that were just trying to enter for a quick buck? I've never seen so much backlash to a giveaway where they ended up giving 80kg of their own money plus sprite prizes. the entitlement is insane. they've talked multiple times about how they hatred they received in response to a nice event they were trying to run for the community put them off doing anything like that again ever. myth literally received anon harassment for this

(frozen comment) Re: Fest Skin Submission Decline

ayrt, every single person i know did not, in fact, try to enter for a quick buck. at least four of them took inspiration directly from the moodboards and resources that mv and august offered, only to be told they weren't good enough. its not entitlement when someone says you will get this, no strings attached, no qualifiers, if you put in some minimum effort and then when you do put in effort they tell you you didn't. that's the shit that makes people stop creating, and it's rich of them to act all benevolent about it

Just baffled now that screenshots have been posted how "sorry, your entry wasn't on theme enough, here's 100g for participating, thank you anyway" was turned into "MV and august claimed my artist friends weren't actually trying at all because it didnt fit their personal aesthetic". Yea before the link was posted I thought it just sounded like someone who was upset that they/their friend got rejected and what do you know, it's that
I know it sucks being rejected but it sounds like more people need to learn that it doesn't mean someone doesn't personally hate you or has a vendetta against you, it just means it didn't fit what they were looking for.

The stats breakdown thread at the very least has motivated some people! The mistral jamboree contest thread went up from 7 pages to 10 since it got posted, with some of the newer entries were made by people who participated in the thread. Newer artists included.

yeppppp, and people have said in the thread that that thread motivated them to make an entry for the first time, or the first time in a long time. honestly thankful that we have players who feel passionate about this and post hard numbers for us to look at. 888 has been championing festival contests for a long time. with the number of times he's entered and won, it's hard not to assume he genuinely cares about the future of festivals

And that's a good enough reason to keep spreading misinformation? That's what gets me about that thread. Not that people are demoralized, but that people *refuse to accept the data* because it doesn't validate them.

Like, holy shit do y'all let this slide in other areas of your life? Not to make this personal, but I'm getting big my-mom-on-vaccines energy from several users in that thread. "I don't like it so it isn't true"

(frozen comment) Re: Fest Skin Submission Decline

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but like, to speak to your specific example, people who are anti-vax are typically swayed back to reality by anecdotes, while data makes them dig their heels in. I think the over-focusing on people having emotional reactions to data telling them their anxieties are baseless is distracting from how you actually solve this problem and just making them cling to their feelings more.

(frozen comment) Re: Fest Skin Submission Decline

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Problem with that too is that no matter how many people bring up that they're a first time winner, they simply choose to believe the same handful of artists are somehow preventing all 20 slots from having a winner.

That doesn't make anti-vaxxers who spread the bullshit any less responsible for the consequences though. Like, I understand you have your feelings. You're still doing harm. The fact that you're having *toddler voice* big feelings about this doesn't negate that. In this case, they're making the fest skin culture really fucking toxic.

Every. Single. shitty opinion in existence originates in someone's sincerely felt feelings. The solution is NOT to continue to maintain an environment where they feel comfortable voicing misinformation. Shutting down misinformation deprives it of a platform and keeps it from spreading. Not validating shitty feelings is part of that.

This. "Look at these statistics" is not likely to solve the problem of people feeling demotivated, but spreading the lie that "newcomers can't win because Staff picks the same handful of winners every month" definitely makes the problem WORSE.

It's a two-part statement:
"I feel like there's no point in me entering —" (subjective emotions; should be met with compassion; probably best solved by Staff adding more incentives for participation) "— because only Staff's Favorite Contest Veterans win anyway" (objectively, provably false statement; demoralizes others and breeds unfair resentment towards past winners; should be countered and not alowed to spread)
