How on earth were the rules changed in private? In the imgur album you linked yourself, they made an announcement in public on the thread pinging every participant that they'd be judging the entries without any name or description context. The fact that your friend's entry was based off an opalizing fossils picture wouldn't have been obvious I guess? Again, I still think you should just post your friends entries that were rejected and let us judge for ourselves whether they should have been disqualified or not.

alright, fine. it was already posted, so i'll let you decide. one of these was given 500g, and one was given 100g. which one do you think is better themed to earth as a flight?

I assume your friend's entry that was DQ'd and received 100g anyway was 'Opalized Underside', the one on page 21?
I don't want to be mean, but I can't really tell what that is aside from bands of brown and blue. If they're looking at 29 pages of these at 350px resolution without any context from the names and the descriptions then yes, I can see why it was disqualified.

Not saying that your friend's feelings are invalid for being hurt by this. I 100% see why this would discourage them from trying to enter contests again. I just don't think attacking MV and 888 about it is correct either.

and the other one got 500g. they are at least equally earth themed. the main difference is one was made by someone in aaa who had printed skins before, and one was by a new artist who was not in aaa.

if they're going to act like they care about encouraging new artists to submit their skins, then i'm going to say that it's bullshit. august and mv are not above all criticism, and it seems pretty clear that their criteria for "earth themed" was vague, arbitrary, and inconsistently applied.

Okay, let's say you're right. What's their motivation for thanklessly running that thread then? Asspats?

alphias is also not in aaa. What are you talking about?

I think you're truly stupid for implying they had motivations beyond encouraging new artists to submit accents. did they succeed in encouraging people? evidently not. you can criticize that all you like. what me and other anons are taking issue with is the idea disqualifying you or your friends was personal or done with malicious intent. you can say the criteria felt arbitrary but it's dumb to keep implying that they're "pretending to care" or some bullshit lmao. you got your feelings hurt and that's okay. doesn't mean their entire stated intent was bullshit, just poorly managed at the end.

my fucking god just say already that you're butthurt that those Big Evil Artists DARED to give feedback to your friends because you can't take politely and neutrally worded criticism whatsoever

you know you don't have to constantly kiss ass right. they're not gonna fuck you bro.

they had a whole thread where you could give and get feedback. if someone's entry wasn't good enough, there is a time and a place for criticism or recommendations. if the whole premise of your contest is "we want as many people to enter as possible and we will offer you this reward" (https://imgur.com/a/6YcQg9B) then maybe don't leave people feeling like they would've been better off not trying in the first place, idk. while you keep white knighting for your favorite internet bestie, i've got a blunt and people who aren't high on their own supply to hang out with. i'm sure august and mv will be soooo proud of you for defending their honor!

(frozen comment) Re: Fest Skin Submission Decline

(Anonymous) 2025-03-19 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But they did give feedback. To those who asked. There was even an instance where they saw someone's work and were like... 'we don't really know what's going on here with this but we see you're trying really hard... what do you need help with to help make it more apparent?'

So. I don't get painting them with the "they never gave feedback" brush either. 'cause they did for plenty of other users. Did the slighted friends ASK for feedback?

Dude, I don't even personally know or give a fuck past the very clear fact that I see a butthurt idiot throwing a tantrum and lying about what was an honest attempt at encouraging folks.

They couldn't be expected to personally guide every user in the contest that didn't ask.

So I got curious and looked. Your friend only made one post in that entire thread and it was just pinging them for their entry. They hadn't posted a WIP before the submission to the actual contest thread, they hadn't asked for feedback, they gave 0 indication they'd be willing to hear constructive criticism from other artists. There is no time and place for *unsolicited feedback*. I'm not defending their honor, I'm laughing at YOU for being this delusional and petty about an objectively neutral interaction 2 years ago.

Was this a rhetorical question because I truly understand why the Aether reads as “better themed”

"Guess which of these is right or wrong" my god. You want us to insult your friend while insulting a random stranger, no matter which we say is the right answer?

Listen. Those two have won so many more fests than any anons here, I think they are much more qualified to judge what FR staff will consider an appropriately earth themed skin. Yes, a lot of submissions could go one way or the other. Yes, someone had to make the call on whether it fits. The only thing they could do was write out clear rules and be consistent and kind, which everyone here agrees they were. Heck, FR STAFF doesn't even set out contest rules as clearly as they did. These people gave out thousands of gems to aspiring artists, and still gave your friend 100g for their time, they are not the petty villains you think they are.

incorrect - they're both my friends. and we all agreed that it was bullshit for one of them to get 500 while the other got 100. go figure.

Are your friends more qualified than the contest runners?

Instead of taking the chance to reflect on why one of them would've been considered earth flight themed and the other one wasn't, you held a grudge for 2 years about it and blame others for being unable to take the slightest criticism? K.

Sorry to roast your friend anon but I have to agree, the aether one still reads as gemstones even without the name, but if you removed the name from the undertide one I wouldn’t have known it was an opal.

if you're going to raise such a huge stink about how it's OBVIOUSLY EARTH FLIGHT THEMED, while also announcing that you're not mad and please don't put that you're mad in the newspaper, then you may have been better off not being specific

because nah it only even remotely reads as "earth flight" with specific paratextual context that the contest runners explicitly said they were not looking at

(frozen comment) Re: Fest Skin Submission Decline

(Anonymous) 2025-03-19 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
truthfully, neither reads as especially earth-themed to me, but I do kind of agree insofar as I actually personally think the undertide comes closer. (specifically: I do think the underbelly is textured to look like polished stone, whereas the aether gems are shaded in a way that to me reads more like water droplets. but would this have felt better to you if their fates were reversed??)

regardless, though, I don't think it's fair to construe this as meaning that the entire thing was somehow an arbitrary sham? that seems wildly out of proportion and even a bit cruel, given the larger context here. this wasn't a raffle or a competition for 888 and MV's own dragons; it was purely an effort to benefit the community. it's okay for them to want people to put in an earnest effort in turn, and it's also okay that at the end of the day they're just two humans making their best, nevertheless subjective judgment calls.
