I just need to scream into the void about this for a second.
The more UMAs I create the more I understand why so many artists lean so hard on "dark earth." It is genuinely just easier to hide the original lines and shadows and not have your design fucked over by the inconsistent rules about transparency levels. I'm not trying to pack in so much detail the dragon is reduced to 6 pixels of skydancer behind a stained glass window covered in spider lilies and koi fish, I just want an extra set of fancy horns. But because I have a light-colored base I get to fight with the queue for 6 weeks and scrape for every percentage of reduced opacity only to have it come out looking like ass anyway.
This is how we ended up with 3 functional accent styles on this hellsite.

i just don't understand the shadows rules at this point
i get that originally skins were intended to be patterning on the dragon and nobody tried to put clothes on them but it just seems so obsolete now...
we're already locked to the very recognisable dragon base and on ancients you can't draw over terts, it's not like shlines contribute to their brand recognition anyway

If someone changes their name to "NameChange" with a bunch of random numbers, do you think that means they are self reporting as a multi? Or know they are gonna get banned or some shit? Someone who messaged me a week ago suddenly changed their name to that and I'm genuinely curious.
I think that's something staff does when a user has an inappropriate name
I don't know about deliberately doing it, but I know that when staff changes rule-breaking names they change them to namechange and a bunch of numbers.
Their user name wasn't inappropriate or rule breaking (at least I can't find a reason it would be) it was one of those people who try to be minimalist and have 1 short word as their UN. It would be ironic if it was rule breaking because it literally was just Rule lol
SA I did just read their profile comments and apparently they got their old account closed for multi accounting so idk. Could be they did it again lol some people never learn

If they're not in the US they may also have requested their account be scrubbed. I know the UK (and some other places?) has "right to be forgotten" laws that mean if someone wants their stuff wiped it has to be done. Iirc staff will namechange the account as part of it to avoid leaving that person's username attached to anything.
Personally I did change the name of my previous account to number spam before self-reporting it so that is possible
I also changed my name when self-reporting so that was my first thought tbh

The rules have been obsolete practically since they were implemented. It took almost no time at all for fest and coli skins to start altering anatomy and adding accessories to dragons and winning staff-run contests.
Look at what you can get away with as long as it's dark:

No hate to batmorgue, I just cite these because I own every colorway of the set so they came to mind first.

At this point I'm pretty convinced they're keeping it either as a 'sunk ''cost'' fallacy' thing or a straight up pride thing. If they changed it now, they'd look 'stupid', or if they changed it now all that 'hard work' of training skin mods would be wasted. I genuinely just think they would rather people 'learn' how to make them look as good as they can instead of making it like...yknow...FUN to make UMAs.
me when a website is consistent about what they want visually from user made content

idk, as a skinmaker i think it's just. stupid. i get why walking back on it so late into the site's lifespan would be stupid but if they did it with gore rules and baby skins idk why they can't do it with shlines now
imo all it does is cause needless pains for artists and wastes more time for skinmods. just leave the shadows/lines in the psds but make them not required in case someone wants to put something directly on the dragon

-idk why they can't do it with shlines now
because that's not what they want. i don't disagree that i wish the rule didn't exist, but at some point i think people just need to accept that it's as simple as that's not what they want on their site.

no, i don't think i will. i think it's absolutely stupid to keep around something so insanely useless and annoying to work with and i'm going to complain about it.
In my ideal world where I'm Flight Rising President and can do what I want, I'd love for custom apparel to be a thing. It'd need a lot of rules to keep it in check and I'm sure it'd be a pain in the ass to moderate sometimes but cmon man! fuck! itd be so cool! this userbase is already so insanely creative with what they do, and we're pretty limited thanks to skin rules. Imagine some of the insanely awesome shit people would do with custom apparel.
Not to mention there'd be no reason not to allow it for ancients seeing as staff don't need to have any input aside from approvals. let people dress their ancients so they're not so naked ;w;

I recall an instance of this happening some years back to someone when they got banned for having signed up while under 13yrs old, their name wasn't rulebreaking otherwise and they were from the US iirc.
I'm not sure why exactly staff does this to some accounts (outside of bad names ofc) and not to others despite similar ban reasons
I wouldn't put it beyond a player to change their own UN prior to a prospective ban but that particular format is the one staff uses.

I suppose I begrudgingly respect the fact that they stick to their guns on this one but I'm also in the boat of thinking that it's incredibly dumb.
Okay so they don't want it. But why? The downside to allowing us to ignore shlines, especially in a potentially limited capacity, is... what exactly?
Pros: more versatility means more interest in custom content means more people will make and use it, which means more money for the site from gem purchases. There'd be more resources for the FR team to work on things like adventure
Cons: ...idk, they'd be worried about the site losing its unique style if people were allowed to create custom apparel... (I highly doubt there would be a significant impact)? Worried about players trying to push limits (which they already do, they have mods for this reason)?

I recognize this is a hugely unpopular opinion but I actually like that shadows and lines make it clear what is site art and what is usermade content.
