i didn't see the signature before they changed it (if anyone has an archived ver please feel free to add for context, not that i think nazi iconography should be shown but it would be useful for context with warning)
but jesus fucking christ dude.
"guys if you thought i was a nazi you shouldve talked to me about it, someone who you thought was a nazi" you arent my friend. if i see someone using nazi iconography who i dont know im NOT going to go up to them like "hi jsyk this is nazi shit! in case you didnt know!" i'm going to block and report them
(mods if this should go in a different thread pls let me know. i dont know if theyre a Common Wanker like princeeridan/astralcrescent, CipherThirteen, etc., but the use of nazi iconography made me feel like it didnt belong in the "petty" thread bc its not really a "petty" concern)
took a quick glance through their profile/dragons and didn't see any other flags, so I'm guessing they really didn't know.
However, the whole:
f you need a template of what to send in a PM like this, I'm just gonna include an outline below.
"Hi there. I noticed in your signature that you have (insert thing here, in this case the skull gifs), which contains a problematic symbol. You may want to remove these gifs to prevent any issues."
Was wholly unnecessary and was likely an overreaction.
AYRT Oh, absolutely. And the phrasing of "problematic symbol" is just NOT IT. Nazi symbols aren't bad because they're """problematic""", they're bad because they're NAZI SYMBOLS.
Also, nobody's going to know EVERYTHING, but it also made me squint with how they said "just tell me next time" instead of something like "I'll be extra careful with my gif sources from now on and will do my research to know what to look out for". Like yeah there's still the possibility of making a slipup like that in the future but it feels like they're just saying they won't bother to research those symbols. (Plus, if you know anything about those symbols, its very hard to """accidentally""" post them, so I'm just.... side-eyeing them REALLY hard right now.)
Literally all they had to do is take down the signature and say "Sorry, I should have checked, and I'll be extra careful from now on" but instead they make it everyone else's responsibility to correct them?
People blocking them and complaining on a salt blog was like, the BEST outcome for them. Someone PMing them doesn't stop others from seeing and blocking anyway, plus it doesn't seem like something that would be appropriate for FR PMs. The knowledgebase even advises you to NOT engage with people you think are posting that stuff and instead report them immediately to staff.
i am also so curious what the gif was. in some post idk where they mentioned that they found the gif on giphy, and when i went there and searched for stuff like skull or skull and bones, there are SOOOOO many normal skull gifs that don't have nazi imagery
i feel like it was a legitimate accident but i'm so confused how they even happened across it in the first place
I didn't see the gif in the signature so this might be incorrect, but if you go to the archive they used (gifcities.org) and search 'skull', the fifth one is a version of the spinning skull gif with the SS bolts edited onto the forehead. Managing to accidentally pick that one when there are hundreds of identical gifs that don't have *That* is one hell of a screw up
OKAAAAYY especially when there is a normal not edited one right next to it, this is crazy 😠someone that responded to the SMR post said that the image URL linked back to a neo nazi blog, so i think you might be right... (clicking the gifs there link back to the archived page)
That's what I thought originally, but then I went to their tumblr profile and thought there's no way they can be a (neo)-nazi. Maybe I'm just too naive (uncertain if that's the right way to phrase it?).
https://www.tumblr.com/saltminerising/801823048761327616/a-few-days-ago-someone-sent-in-an-ask-about-a-user?source=share It was spinning skulls with SS bolts on their forehead, their defense was "The skull in question is an old gif from the 90's that I saw in a meme about some old software that put it next to dead people in the system." (What?)
They supposedly got it from some mass gif archive on neocities and "didn't know the source", but according to monokoneko in their reply to the Tone Deaf Apology Post the gif source directly comes from a neo nazi blog. Like, there were SO many steps during the process where they had a chance to check the source and realize Hey That's Bad:
"For context to others, I actually saw the gif and it literally linked to a neo nazi blog (they got the gif from a mass gif archive and didn't check the image source). No one is going to message you when this sort of thing happens because it really doesn't look like an accident and no one wants to risk talking to a nazi. That's why I didn't reach out and instead reported it.
To clarify, when I say linked, i mean the image source link/url came from the blog. The image did not take you there when you clicked on it."
Like, with dedicated gif sharing sites i could MAYBE understand making a stupid mistake like that (MAYBE), but the blog was literally connected to the image source link. I get Hanlon's razor and all ("Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.") but this is like a DANGEROUSLY stupid mistake to be making when they had so many opportunities to check. Like they've been like "I just wanted a stupid skull gif for halloween" but idk man even if I didn't know about symbols or dogwhistles I'd PROBABLY take a second to wonder why there were two lightning bolts on a skull, and PROBABLY wouldn't use them for a HALLOWEEN SIGNATURE.
oops i saw your post after i commented, that's the comment SMR i was talking about. and i agree, i don't want to contribute their actions to malice (based on some searching, i found their toyhouse that said they're 14 and it looks to be a few years old, so i think they're pretty young), but i'm soooo confused how this happened... there are just so many normal skull gifs across the internet just how... unless they truly didn't notice the lightning bolts or something
AYRT That's definitely possible... I couldn't find their toyhouse, but if that's correct and it's up to date and they're 14 right now, they were under 13 when they created their account (Joined Jan 17, 2023), so it's looking like a pretty bad morton's fork situation for them. If their age is an excuse for their mistake, they're able to be banned for creating an account underage, so either way people might have a valid reason to report them.
I don't think I'll report their age because it's not onsite and the toyhouse COULD be inactive or outdated (and also because sometimes kids ARE stupid and sign up for websites underage. I never did it but I can't blame them), so this whole speculation could be wrong (if they didn't make their account under 13 they should probably have been old enough by now to know to check sources on things..... but I digress).
But if they WERE underage by FR terms then their account is definitely in danger considering how seriously FR staff take the age restriction (and for good reason).
If they had just said ‘sorry, I didn’t realize what I had used - thank you for letting me know and I’ll make sure to pay better attention next time’ or something, this would have blown over on the first post and no one would have given them a second thought. But they had to get overly defensive and condescending instead, and have now possibly Streisand Effected themselves into an underage ban lmao.
So apparently there was a... meme? I guess? a few years ago.. posted to ifunny, based on a tweet, someone made featuring said software (windows 95 era supposedly) that did put spinning skulls on accounts (probably clients) of people that passed away. It's unclear what the software was for, other than that the person filming the skull said it was for work. So like. The original source, and that part of the story, seems to check out. (I googled "old software that used skulls meme" and it was one of the first few results)
....But even if that was the source of inspiration, googling "rotating skull gif" gets you that same unedited skull? I can't even see an edited version like that of it in google search. So... I'm a little confused at how we ended up somewhere where there even was an edited nazi version in the first place? I can't say GifCities would've been my first pick (though admittedly seems like a neat site otherwise), I probably would have tried Tenor or something first because google spits those out first and if I'm just dressing up for a holiday I'm not gonna put that much effort into where a gif comes from... y'know? I'd just go with the first one that works. So I'm just?????
I can absolutely see now how on THAT site one could misclick the wrong one though, they're kinda small and there's several right next to each other and if I wasn't specifically looking for the bad one I can't say I would have noticed it at first either.
Think I found the skull gif IrradiatedRisk used in their signature based on another anon's comment (see link below, obv warning for nazi symbolism plus flashing visuals); the fifth gif has a skull with the SS thunderbolts on it. While the thunderbolts aren't obvious imo, there are several gifs of the same skull without them that are listed before the nazi skull. Not only that, clicking on the skull brings you to a neo-nazi website with a swastika front and center. Like, I don't think they're a nazi but they do strike me as pretty oblivious (to put it nicely).
Okay yeah, my crappy eyesight would not have caught that with a computer screen but... did she really not check the link? Why choose that skull and not the normal ones right next to it?
JSYK Risk goes by He/It/They, but you probably didn't know. Just letting you know! But yeah that's my take too. Like maybe they're just stupid but it's so many mistakes and "coincidences" that it's kinda passed general stupidity, and if we're still giving them the benefit of the doubt it's still dangerously naïve for a self-admitted senior in high school
shit sorry I didn't know about their pronouns, thank you, I would go back and edit the comment if it was possible
yeah, exactly, it's like... I can see a scenario where he just genuinely did not pay attention and just saved the file to use it later, it's not impossible, just unlikely
and nazi sympathizer shit is exactly the kind of thing where bad faith actors shield themselves with plausible deniability, so it's not safe to just give everyone the benefit of doubt every time
AYRT + thread OP anon all good! totally get it, it's an easy mistake to make especially since it's not listed on their clan profile and is only on their tumblr.
And yeahyeahyeah exactly that, like if it was something that WASNT a hate symbol but was still offensive or disrespectful or just inappropriate for the forums i'd be a lot more lenient with them
but it's because racist and nazi sympathizers and other bad faith actors along those lines specifically THRIVE on being able to coast by on shit like plausible deniability and gaslighting and DARVO that i'm so hesitant to give them the benefit of the doubt in this case.
ESPECIALLY when there's an extremely concerning amount of nazi sentiment building up among the youth nowadays (any amount is extremely concerning but you get what i mean lmao) so their age/maturity isn't a completely valid excuse either way. like when you have the internet at your fingertips and a dedicated online presence you stop being able to deflect with "i just didn't know" when there's so much information out there
Okay, I can tell why they didn't see it, I had to literally lean close to my screen and squint to see it, because it's really small and blends into the skull itself, not to mention how fast the skull is spinning.
I find their insistence that people should just PM people who appear to be Nazis to let them know they appear to be Nazis way more irritating than the fact they used a gif with a hate symbol in it. Like, looking at the gif itself that people have linked elsewhere in the thread, I can see how it might be missed—still a bit sus, but I can see it being possible. But the insistence that people should take them aside privately about something they are displaying publicly, especially when the issue is that they are displaying something that makes them appear to be a hateful aggressive person, is so crazy to me and their apparent young age doesn't explain the lack of common sense. Don't encourage people to approach Nazis, or people who appear to be Nazis! Blocking and reporting is the correct course of action! Approaching them personally is a terrible idea that will go wrong sooner rather than later. I'd like to see them offer an apology for that lmao
their pcyt post (archived it a couple days ago) where they were whinging (and vagueposting) about people reporting them for using a nazi symbol is gone, so i dont know if they deleted it themself or staff pruned it for vaguely being related to hate symbols and moderation decisions
but yeah this all couldve been avoided with a quick "i'm really sorry, i didn't notice and i promise i'll be more careful with my sources in the future" but like you said, hate symbols are zero tolerance ban items. i don't know if the mods will nuke them or not, considering the rule is:

Any race, nation, or culture Any aspect of sexual orientation or gender identity Religions or religious figures Real-world political figures Physical or mental disabilities
This also includes any content or LINKS TO CONTENT (emphasis mine) which promote genocide or fascism. These are not allowed as they are based on hatred and the elimination or subjugation of other races, cultures, religions, sexuality, identity, or disability. Any account found promoting these will be closed without warning and without the option for appeal.
which makes me think of a few things they could try their "i really didn't know" excuse, which honestly still doesn't seem like it would fly going by the wording of the rule? like sure, maybe they didnt MEAN to promote it, but they still put a hate symbol in their sig and the blog name was in the source being a senior in high school is WAY too old for them to be doubling down like this publicly. if they made this mistake at 13, 14, 15, maybe i'd believe they were just stupid, but if you're a senior in high school you HAVE to be mature enough to know and accept how you fucked up and that people aren't obligated to coddle you (esp when they have reason to think you are a nazi).
maybe they wouldn't go straight to a nuke since IR has "plausible deniability" but instead an escalated penalty? because they DID still post a hate symbol and respond inappropriately to people expressing discomfort. i dunno i'm just rambling at this point.
sidenote why are pyct regulars so annoying. does this forum have a pyct specific salt/quarantine thread or what because so many people there are the most annoying people everrrr
The general discussion boards in general attract a lot of terminally online young people, especially the PCYT thread. Which has had to be temporarily locked how many times now? Because people were being way too personal on it? Just a lot of kids who need some off screen time.
Not to downplay the heinousness of the situation but it would have been really funny if someone PM’ed them like:
"Hi there. I noticed in the PYCT thread that you said "I just really hope nothing bad happens to this at this rate", which contains wording that makes it sound like preserving your reputation is more important than making FR an inclusive space. You may want to remove this post to prevent any issues."
