it must suck to be part of the site's most incompetent dom team, huh. Duchess mysteriously disappearing couldn't have possibly been accounted for, and I hope they're okay, but- you didn't have a plan B in case the person in that position suddenly couldn't do their job, such as if an unexpected emergency came up? You didn't even have the graphics ready?? YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE GRAPHICS READY???
Not a member of fire, but good lord dude. Get your head out of your ass. A member of their team vanished without a word when there are disasters that they could be in, one of the team explained, and you are blowing up on them.
I don't agree with the tone of this anon's response but it is strange that there was nobody available to make functional replacement posts (at this point the oof raffle is up but there is no way to send to it) and that it appears that no graphics are complete when that is a process that should've begun weeks ago.
It is possible to both have empathy for those involved and acknowledge that a better plan could be put into place to handle events like this in the future. I hope everything turns out alright for all involved.
I hope the people involved are alright in the end and that this is just a one-off incident. It's not a good look with an ember warning us here a month or so ago and with whatever the fuck happened last year though.
Ngl, I have to say the response by Pessi citing IRL issues kinda came off like what arcane dom was doing and I really hope this isn't something to be repeated as an excuse. IRL is something everyone has to deal with but a dom team is supposed to have multiple people behind it. There's also the entire flight to back them if necessary and drawing help from them (by you know, actually asking since people can't read minds) shouldn't be something that the dom team avoids.
It's very odd that even embers seem to be clueless as to what's going on.
hi, I'm one of the embers that came to warn everyone a few months back (at the end of Thundercrack, actually) about how I didn't have faith in the Dom Team to have stuff ready for this push and cited last year's problems.
The thing is, the majority of the team is fine. Most of the people had major issues with Duchess' handling of things, and if people remember the leaks of the Dom Issues thread in the Fire Flight Discord, the main problems outlined were:
- communication from the team to the flight - who can run events - lack of proper prep for the flight's push - wanting more pushes/more events
This may be outing myself slightly but I was one of the main vocal people in that thread trying to propose solutions, and a number of us very concerned people from last year decided to take on new roles to try and alleviate the issues we had with last year's push. I became an event runner, and Pessi was one of those people who also stepped up and joined the AA to try and help fix the issues.
I don't want to think that this is the case, but I had people warning me last year that the issue is more to do with a particular head of the team that wants to keep it so that they run things and not let the others deviate just slightly. It's most likely why the rest of the team were like "what do we do what do we do" instead of going to deviate and getting the thread up without the graphics so the attendants could actually do their jobs.
I honestly wished my gut instinct wasn't correct because it was warning me that this year's fest push would go up in flames (har har) spectacularly and I wasn't expecting this. Especially since I encouraged a lot of new people to help join the events and the raffle/public buy so that they felt involved and could help out.
Sometimes it feels like I've poured more into the community with what I've done than what the main lead has done over the course of the year alone and I don't think it's fair tbh.
honestly you should ice this person out. unless they have the whole dom/raffle bank or they're the owner of the discord or something they actually don't have a lot of power on their own. even if they have significant flight resources those can be fundraised for. you can just all make your own threads and spreadsheets yourself. you wouldn't even be starting from scratch if you had some current leads on the new dom team.
it's not a great time to start afresh considering the upcoming battle but i think people would really root for you if this happened, and you can crowd source knowledge. i used to be a dom lead and if this situation happened i would gladly reach out to offer advice and what bit of institutional knowledge from my flight i can pass on. i think a lot of other people would feel the same, and the water flight team doesn't seem like they'd be dicks about it or anything, so.
Fire seems like a tough flight to try to do dom in. You guys could be like earth, but Fire has had so many collapses and the blows never seem to stop. Idk how you sustain an organization in that, it would make sense if its just one person trying to keep the reigns and letting it fall apart around them. Still, I really hope its just that Duchess had something happen and ultimately shows up healthy
That's terrible to hear fire nonny, but I, an icicle you've never met, am proud of you and your fellow volunteers for trying to do the right thing.
Does Duchess control the flight's funds? From my limited perspective, if Duchess only has power over the dom team because of a title and some history, then it should be pretty straightforward to collectively go "no, we're not going to listen to you anymore, we don't need you" and take some independence back, right?
Duchess has all funds and all items. They use this to decide who does dim and who doesn't. When they were asked what happened to donated items that I donated I was told they were used... but we hadn't done anything in Dom in recent months. After I asked where, the question was ignored. Never answered. I left fire after. I know it was just good battle stones but still!
I mean, while I'm of the mind that donations are donations and really shouldn't be micromanaged that hard... It should be possible to track where they went.
Also... Uh, having a single dom organizer have everything seems like a horrible idea. What if Dutchess gets hacked? Or banned?
No we did not have a backup ready at the time but we had the code and worked with that.
Secondly, no, the banner and headers were not ready. I have been busy trying to apply for my first ever job as a veterinarian assistant, which was very tedious to do, as well as working on paid for commissions in my queue, my sister’s sweet 16, working towards getting a driver’s permit, etc. I am not payed to do this for fire dom- this is voluntary work as an AA member. That being said, please understand why not all of the graphics were ready as I had to tend to important irl things, thank you.
Would Duchess even allow you to have a back up? I remember when I was in fire. A group of users had made the prizes with the flight and the theme for a profit push and everything. Duchess 'offered' to host the in flight raffle and then ghosted after the thread was up for 2 weeks. There was information we needed updated within the raffle post, but it never got updated. At the time, the rest of the team did not have access to the ping lists for fire so they were trying to type updates on discord and the forum. It was a hot mess. We placed 7th as a profit pushing flight when no one else was pushing actively.
Then Duchess 'lost' some prizes and had to regret them so I had to wait for my prize an extra 2 weeks. Why is she in leadership again? 8/10 reasons why I left fire was her mismanagement of dom.
AYRT; Hold on, you're the only person assigned to making graphics? Then it doesn't matter how busy or available you would have been, that's too much work for one person and it never would have been done on time anyway! Other flights have multiple volunteers for graphics, and different deadlines for concepts, sketches, and finished works, and the final deadline is at least a few days before the start of a push.
You're not being criticized for having a life outside the game. You're being criticized for the poor planning and organization by your team.
I do not plan on making personal issues as a “constant excuse”- i did indeed have a lot of things come up though that i needed to deal with first. Please don’t take this as me… blowing smoke? I guess that phrase works for this? Idk im exhausted lol..
I will not deny that this has been an issue of very poor management/organization either. It very much is. And from what i’ve been reading through the thread, and what i’ve personally seen, this has been an on-going thing. I am also frustrated about this whole thing as much as you guys, especially since I joined the team to try and alleviate these issues.. Regardless, please know i’ll do my best to help out to the best of my ability, and so will the other team members.
Again if you feel the need to discuss anything with me on places like Discord please do not hesitate to do so, I wont bite and i want to make sure communication is open- I am very much aware this was another issue in the past as well.
(Apologies if my words are a little jambled, was on my feet all day at work and im exhausted but awake and finishing art regardless shdjfj)
It's great that you joined the dom team to help alleviate these issues. In struggling dom teams, people like you who have fresh ideas and energy are absolutely needed, and it's really awesome that you stepped up. A lot of people complain about their dom teams but not many take the initiative to try to change things, after all.
I do wonder, though, about the internal politics of Firedom. I've heard some worrying things about Duchess and their control of the team over the years, and I am concerned that with the way FR dom culture is, it's hard to oust someone who is not on board with changing how things are done. Lightning seemed to pull it off; the new orgs they hired have turned things around somewhat and the battle with Wind went great, but that could only have happened because they were allowed to take the reins and try new things. Arcane seems to have a similar problem to Fire, and I wonder if the new blood isn't really allowed to change things in both flights (if there even are new orgs in Arcane).
100%, this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone prioritizing their real life stuff, even if it comes at the expense of their FR duties.
However, situations like these are completely avoidable with better organization. We simply don't see issues like these in the more Dom-oriented flights like Earth, Water, Plague, etc. I'm sure people on those teams have dealt with crazy IRL stuff that impeded their ability to complete their duties, but there are systems in place that ensure one person isn't responsible for one super important thing.
I do think, despite IRL issues AA members might have dealt with, this could have been avoided with a few things other flights do already, eg: graphics should be due a week before the push so that someone can slap together backup graphics during that week if someone goes AWOL, and thread code should be in a shared file so any team member can jump in and post it. I also don't understand why there wasn't more explicit communication with Embers. Why didn't other AA members offer this information up sooner? If Embers knew that the graphics were going to be delayed, maybe someone who wouldn't normally contribute could have jumped in before the push started.
I completely sympathize with IRL stuff taking away from participation in FR, and I would obviously never suggest anyone prioritize FR over IRL stuff. But volunteer/extracurricular/recreational responsibilities are still responsibilities, and peoples' investment in Dom events isn't less "real" because it's all online.
If I invite a couple friends over for board game night but drop the ball, it's not a big deal—I've just disappointed them and it'll be easy to reschedule. But organizing Dom events is more like a board game convention. A lot of people are depending on you to pull off a larger scale event on a specific date, and it does suck when their expectations are dashed, or the work they put in goes to waste, not because someone had IRL stuff come up but because the organization was poorly managed to begin with.
+1 im retired now, but i've been a dom leader in two different flights, and this situation is EASILY avoided. it's disappointing to see how disorganized fire seems to be as a whole. i'm hoping they learn from this and stop putting all their eggs in one unreliable basket
Pessi: I did indeed get the job! First day was already an amazing experience, but VERY fast paced. Standin’ 24:7, tending to boarded pets, stocking up supplies/medicine/etc for the vets, and a whole lot more. Currently being trained to do so, but we also have to restrain the animals so that the vet/vet technicians can perform their job while we make sure the animal doesnt harm them, us, or itself.
I am not easily grossed out by anything- so long story short, i seem to have become the go-to person to set up the fecal samples for examination which is kinda funny LMAO
In terms of the permit though, still doing my research on everything regarding that, it’s on the list of next things to do though!
Me, and a few others plus the AA team are currently discussing what our best course of action is after this push. I will share details more on this later for transparency, but our consensus is that we have poor direction and management, as well as a need to reform how we currently operate as we are currently disorganized.
I do have some ideas to share on how we may reform this, and I will indeed be presenting that, as well as the opinions shared on this thread as well. Feel free to reply to this as well if there are arguments here that were not already shared!

(Anonymous) 2023-08-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)Me, and a few others plus the AA team are currently discussing what our best course of action is after this push.
