AYRT; Hold on, you're the only person assigned to making graphics? Then it doesn't matter how busy or available you would have been, that's too much work for one person and it never would have been done on time anyway! Other flights have multiple volunteers for graphics, and different deadlines for concepts, sketches, and finished works, and the final deadline is at least a few days before the start of a push.
You're not being criticized for having a life outside the game. You're being criticized for the poor planning and organization by your team.
I do not plan on making personal issues as a “constant excuse”- i did indeed have a lot of things come up though that i needed to deal with first. Please don’t take this as me… blowing smoke? I guess that phrase works for this? Idk im exhausted lol..
I will not deny that this has been an issue of very poor management/organization either. It very much is. And from what i’ve been reading through the thread, and what i’ve personally seen, this has been an on-going thing. I am also frustrated about this whole thing as much as you guys, especially since I joined the team to try and alleviate these issues.. Regardless, please know i’ll do my best to help out to the best of my ability, and so will the other team members.
Again if you feel the need to discuss anything with me on places like Discord please do not hesitate to do so, I wont bite and i want to make sure communication is open- I am very much aware this was another issue in the past as well.
(Apologies if my words are a little jambled, was on my feet all day at work and im exhausted but awake and finishing art regardless shdjfj)
It's great that you joined the dom team to help alleviate these issues. In struggling dom teams, people like you who have fresh ideas and energy are absolutely needed, and it's really awesome that you stepped up. A lot of people complain about their dom teams but not many take the initiative to try to change things, after all.
I do wonder, though, about the internal politics of Firedom. I've heard some worrying things about Duchess and their control of the team over the years, and I am concerned that with the way FR dom culture is, it's hard to oust someone who is not on board with changing how things are done. Lightning seemed to pull it off; the new orgs they hired have turned things around somewhat and the battle with Wind went great, but that could only have happened because they were allowed to take the reins and try new things. Arcane seems to have a similar problem to Fire, and I wonder if the new blood isn't really allowed to change things in both flights (if there even are new orgs in Arcane).
100%, this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone prioritizing their real life stuff, even if it comes at the expense of their FR duties.
However, situations like these are completely avoidable with better organization. We simply don't see issues like these in the more Dom-oriented flights like Earth, Water, Plague, etc. I'm sure people on those teams have dealt with crazy IRL stuff that impeded their ability to complete their duties, but there are systems in place that ensure one person isn't responsible for one super important thing.
I do think, despite IRL issues AA members might have dealt with, this could have been avoided with a few things other flights do already, eg: graphics should be due a week before the push so that someone can slap together backup graphics during that week if someone goes AWOL, and thread code should be in a shared file so any team member can jump in and post it. I also don't understand why there wasn't more explicit communication with Embers. Why didn't other AA members offer this information up sooner? If Embers knew that the graphics were going to be delayed, maybe someone who wouldn't normally contribute could have jumped in before the push started.
I completely sympathize with IRL stuff taking away from participation in FR, and I would obviously never suggest anyone prioritize FR over IRL stuff. But volunteer/extracurricular/recreational responsibilities are still responsibilities, and peoples' investment in Dom events isn't less "real" because it's all online.
If I invite a couple friends over for board game night but drop the ball, it's not a big deal—I've just disappointed them and it'll be easy to reschedule. But organizing Dom events is more like a board game convention. A lot of people are depending on you to pull off a larger scale event on a specific date, and it does suck when their expectations are dashed, or the work they put in goes to waste, not because someone had IRL stuff come up but because the organization was poorly managed to begin with.
+1 im retired now, but i've been a dom leader in two different flights, and this situation is EASILY avoided. it's disappointing to see how disorganized fire seems to be as a whole. i'm hoping they learn from this and stop putting all their eggs in one unreliable basket
