AYRT
They did say it would release with a special gift - I had just assumed that was the one they’re selling, but I guess it’ll be a different one? Or not a familiar at all? I can’t imagine they’d release apparel with an ancient so maybe an effect or vista or something, if not a familiar.

? I'm criticizing where they've spelt it kilin (Japan)

My first thought was "horsie" and as a recovering horse girl I, unfortunately, am predicting a relapse

aren't there romanization differences that could account for this? i'm pretty sure i've seen the japanese version spelled that way before
DA
I've seen it spelled both ways. /shrug

i appreciate the lengths they went to for cultural sensitivity but the process sounds absolutely exhausting
it was always my understanding that open cultures and their mythology, which i thought included most eastern cultures, were generally considered "okay" to draw inspiration, from never mind reference obliquely as would have been the case with a kirin.
has that attitude changed? or is the kirin more sacred of an animal compared to say a lion dog (which also has familiars inspired by it) or something like the sphinx (tomb guardians/sacred animals in ancient egypt) and required more care in handling?

which is worse because there's literally no l in Japanese, so they literally westernized it lmao.
to my understanding there's been an ongoing discussion (especially since the auraboa incident) about how east asian cultures are referenced and portrayed within the wind flight (and how much of that is appropriative), so to avoid something like the auraboa incident happening again they went above and beyond with covering their bases
The R in Japanese isn’t the same as the R in English either. They translated it to English using an accepted translation. Translation is really difficult shit. This is a completely reasonable thing to do. Don’t make up problems where there’s none to be found.
i'm seeing this repeated sentiment about how "paywalling" will affect familiar collectors. i don't see how it's different functionally from gem familiars from holiday events, someone will sell them for in-game currency in the auction house or there will be players to trade with (likely even in your own flight). people are really wanting to gloss over the fact that it's a charity familiar that will likely be broadly accessible even after its run
minor note: transliteration, not translation
+1, and the fact that they had to write an entire post full of disclaimers ahead of the release proves it. fr fanbase has justified concerns sometimes but it’s kinda crazy to accuse them of being performative for releasing something that there’s already precedent for (a gem breed ancient). i don’t think they’re being predatory with a *$2.50* paywalled familiar, *which the proceeds for go to charity and not the site*, but i guess i see why people would be unhappy with that. but the dragon itself is fine to be a gem breed. you don’t even have to pay irl money to get gems.

yet another one of those pointless things people use to find problems with fr
why do you guys (not anon im replying to) read several paragraphs explaining fr's intent and the steps they took to be respectful to the mentioned cultures. and people are talking about a potential typo or localization

they don’t care, they just want to complain that the game is inaccessible.
yeah im really not seeing the issue here. this is effectively a 250g gem familiar with a speedbump in the way of getting it. players willing and able to pay will, undoubtedly, buy multiple and list/trade them. for many players its the USD price equivalent of a bag of chips, and for those that cant afford buying it directly (either due to cost, currency conversion, or legal limitations) they can still get it from the AH.
frankly i vastly prefer this approach over a super limited one-per-player release familiar that is inherently very restrictive for any new players that join later on. and, like you said, its egregiously ignoring the fact that all of the proceeds are donated as a starting apology for the cultural appropriation baked into wind's lore. no good deed goes unpunished

Disclaimer, I don't mind that this familiar being sold for USD and I think it's wonderful they're donating the proceeds. However it is absolutely different from the gem holiday fams.
This new one is being retired permanently after the 90 days are up. The gem holidays fams will return the next year, so someone who missed it this year will know to save up when it comes around next year if they can't or don't want to deal with trading or the AH then and there.
A more comparable example would be the Willowmane Deerling. It was given out as a Galore Gift to everyone when Veils were released, and you were able to craft more at Baldwin for a week. Afterwards, they were permanently retired. Nowadays if you want one, the current LAH for them is 700g or 450,000t, and there's only 8 of them in total on the AH.
So, while I don't mind this familiar and will absolutely be able to get one, I can totally see why collectors who can't afford to get it now feel bad about it. If for whatever reason they can't get it now, it's going to be inflated to hell soon enough.

my problem personally is the 90 day availability window to purchase it and then it retires permanently. no annual cycling, no nothing. at least at present.
that feels really fomo-ish, especially given it has to be bought with RLC straight up. not gems.
so if you literally don't have a way to buy it from FR in 90 days (or outright can't because of age/country/whatever), you're out of luck. yeah some people will buy extras to sell but you're at the mercy of the player market then.
it just feels weird because they've never done anything like this with any other item post-KS with the exception of the sticker star vista and you can buy that any time of year. and it's a vista not a familiar.

SA looks like they corrected it now. thank you FR
Japanese American here: the r and l can be used interchangeably when translating certain things because the r sound in Japanese sounds like a mix of the r and l sound in English.
Translating with L as opposed to R is a becoming less common though, but it’s really up to whomever is translating.

I roll my eyes anytime anyone complains about something costing Gem currency on this site. It is SO easy to get gems without spending a dime of real money. I don’t play a ton of other pet sims these days, but everything I hear secondhand tells me that FR is the exception to how premium currency is handled, not the rule.
The reason the charity Familiar is going to be for straight up cash and not gems is because this is not some million dollar company - if people can get free gems as easily as you can on the site, they’re not going to be using real money to buy it. And that means FR would have to use their own funds to match the donations, which would mean they won’t be able to donate as much.
Obviously we don’t have access to their financials to see how much they actually get in profit from gems/ads/merch, but I really can’t imagine they’re making that much bank off this site. They obviously make enough to keep running it and pay their staff, but it’s not like they’re making us donate to organizations for their tax breaks while they sip caviar martinis on their private jet yachts or whatever. (Then again, you’d have to pay me a fortune to put up with the nonstop whining from this user base, so maybe they actually are filthy rich off dragon pngs.)

ayrt that's even stranger to me because iirc the only thing "east asian" that wind really has going on is the fact it has bamboo?? and maybe the bamboo falls venue resembling an asian water garden or something.
spirals don't resemble lung dragons in the slightest (that's imperials) and i can't think of any wind fest apparel that appeared heavily influenced by the culture either.
but even so i guess i still was under the impression that many open cultures indeed want their culture shared? which included having things be inspired by it and becoming their own thing.

Lmao this is the most incredibly performative white guilt thing they've said yet
Yeah cool charity but like. Wow.

theyre calling it the worst bait ever posted on ARR
you're right and you should say it
(preemptively: i am one of the asian cultures they mentioned here, and this feels hella condescending in a very typical white guilt way.)
