The R in Japanese isn’t the same as the R in English either. They translated it to English using an accepted translation. Translation is really difficult shit. This is a completely reasonable thing to do. Don’t make up problems where there’s none to be found.

why do you guys (not anon im replying to) read several paragraphs explaining fr's intent and the steps they took to be respectful to the mentioned cultures. and people are talking about a potential typo or localization

Japanese American here: the r and l can be used interchangeably when translating certain things because the r sound in Japanese sounds like a mix of the r and l sound in English.

Translating with L as opposed to R is a becoming less common though, but it’s really up to whomever is translating.

See also: リナ and りょこう both having the lettter "リ"/"り" (okay, one is in hiragana and one is in katana but shhhhh) but one is "Lina" and the other is "Ryoko".

l = r in Japanese (seriously I've seen stuff from native Japanese mixing the two all the time). Not like either letter actually exists in Japanese anyway, all romanization is a compromise.

This, Japanese people sometimes romanize Rs as Ls themselves.
