I think the shop will help a bit with how we have things now (and it’s nice to get reduced costs for the modern side as a result + easier to get coli genes this way), but honestly I still think they overcomplicated ancient genes from the start. I feel like the simpler solution would have just been to make a Modern and Ancient version of a gene, and list in the description what breeds can use that. So if you go buy Ancient Breed: Firefly, the description would say These breeds can use this gene: (insert whatever ones have it here). Add new breeds to the description as they get it. Then you just get two gene items to deal with across the site. Maybe there’s coding issues that prevent that, but if you can lock out certain breeds from Modern genes, why can’t you do the reverse?
I’m also confused what’s preventing them from adding the Marketplace ancient genes here. They said it’s because of the lowered pricing in the marketplace, but just.. set it to that price in the GE shop? We have plenty of shops with a mix of treasure/gem/item-currency, so it’s not like it isn’t possible.
I appreciate them trying to make things work and I know they’re doing the best with the system they have set up, but I feel like there’s never going to be a streamlined way of doing it when we have five+ different gene scrolls for one gene. On the plus side, we get a nice new NPC, and I do love GE shops, sooo.. I’ll take it lol.
Just want to comment re: the one gene with listing of breeds.
I feel the problem with this is twofold.
The first is that tooltips are notoriously finicky on some devices (and I am on PC and they get stuck for me all the time) so it would be harder for people to find the gene they want if they have this problem.
The other is that the potential list of dragons that the gene could be used on could become very unwieldy. Like, right now, we have a limited number of ancients, and I am not sure which gene is used on most (or all) of them. So, for now it is fine. But how about when we have 14 ancients who might all use the same gene? We now have 14 dragon breeds listed in the tooltip. Or 15 breeds but only one *doesn't* use the gene. Again, either 14 listed, or they change the structure to say 'X breed *doesn't* use this gene' which has the problem of people thinking that the gene is ONLY available on that breed and buying it for that breed. Someday we might even have 20+ ancient breeds, with a varying mix using various genes.
I think that is one reason they might not have went with the 'two genes, just list what ancients do or don't use the gene in tooltip' solution, because it would be a nightmare on some devices, and ultimately would potentially stop working when we have so many dragons using one particular gene that the tooltip is too long (and finding a specific breed within a wall of text, or remember that this little icon means X breed within a wall of icons, would be a pain)
Those are very fair points - I hadn’t considered that, and I can definitely see the issues that could come up. I guess there’s not really one perfect solution to the problem.
I do still hope they add the parallel MP genes to the new shop, which would at least cut down clutter in the MP. But they did say they’re working on a solution to that, so I’ll wait and see how it works out.
Ancient gene scrolls are half the price of modern gene scrolls. Going with this suggestion means people will be paying double than they had previously.
I won't be opposed to GlassGloss giving us 75k + ancient gene in exchange for one copy of the modern variant though.

I am also waiting to see how the MP gene solution is going to look, and hopefully it will be everything people hope for :D

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:04 am (UTC)(link)so for example a modern gene that's 150k would trade for the ancient version of that + 75k treasure
