Discord Drama! Adult Content Channel Requiring Real ID?

I don't know any of these people personally but one of the newer asks on saltminesrising is BLOWING UP right now over some people requiring your real ID to join an adult content oriented FR server channel?

It's already been archived like 3 times already lol, here's the most recent one that I just did.

My opinion is that adults can do their own risk assessment but it's stupid to send personally identifying information to strangers online. Once you put it on the internet, it's there forever, and not everyone who might stumble across it will have good intentions. That kind of risk is NOT worth it for a discord server, jesus christ.

Not only that, but there's a specific issue with it being a Discord server in that you need to send your ID to an actual random, specific human (or channel) on Discord. This isn't going to be uploaded using any kind of obscuring technology, or automatically deleted, and whoever's checking them can't possibly be able to identify proper forms of ID from all around the world.

There's a reason you show your ID to, say, a bouncer, who has a look at it and gives it back, rather than just goes off with a photo of it for an unspecified amount of time and says they'll delete it.

You're absolutely right and I'm glad word is getting out about how weird this is. A lot of FR drama is pointless but this could really affect people's lives if it went wrong.

I wonder how many people have already forked over their ID. :(

I'm in the server and I can tell you the majority of the people in there are a-okay with sending IDs and most likely have already sent them to the mods.

They tried to defend themselves in the notes saying that the bare minimum you need to do is just block out everything else and just include your DOB, but 1) that just makes it meaningless at that point because it becomes so easy to fabricate and 2) I wonder if they only said that as an attempt to backpedal after realizing all the negative attention this is garnering.

The way people talked about it in the notes that seemed to be in the server implies that only including your DOB is an ALTERNATIVE solution. Captain-chompers even describes it as a "bare-minimum", meaning they'd accept more information if you were to give it. And, based on the initial feelings about it, I get the feeling that this bare minimum wasn't disclosed in the beginning, but maybe that's just me. I wish I could see the wording of whatever post they made that told people they'd need to show ID, it'd clear things up for me I feel.

My guess is that considering SMR can delete anything if you ask them to, Dakkokki saw they weren't going anywhere with their defenses and asked for it to be deleted.

I asked for it to be deleted because I'm a csa survivor and arguing that you shouldn't protect kids for risk of your date of birth was making me have a panic attack

That they even think there's a bare minimum of ID for this is absurd. There's a reason FR doesn't let people give out their exact birth year on the forums.

Idk if there's a more relevant comment to be replying to (currently 11:43pm and I work at 7am tomorrow lmaooo), but uh. There's been a lot of talk here about the porn channels, which, yeah, there's a whole bunch of them; but I guarantee there were more people like me in Dakkokki's server who were only there to chat with other adults about a browser game. Idk man I'm not about letting someone fuckin card me to exist in a space where I don't even want to look at the porn 99% of the time.

I would just start my own 18+ server with blackjack and no hookers but I don't have the time nor mental capacity to moderate one :\

This was me until people started posting about anatomically correct animal dicks so I had to gtfo. Gotta say, that's my hard limit. I was there around the time of its conception and left a while back. It seemed to me to just be a clique of porn addicts, honestly.

I'm gonna a be honest I legitimately do not understand why this is a big deal. I've been in lots of nsfw discord servers that require a censored ID+selfie for access. Nothing has ever gone wrong. Everyone talking about doxxing and shit but like. Maybe I just don't have the shit to lose to be worrying about it. What are they gonna do with my DoB anyways? You can't get into my bank account with that, you can't find my address with that, hell, you can find more about me on my other social medias. It's just another gate to deter the people who might try and sneak in yknow. Like you lock your door to deter thieves but if they really want they can just do a quick Google and figure out how to pick the lock. You're not ever gonna be 100% safe anywhere. Even in your own home.

You’d be surprised with what people can do with seemingly little information. You get enough information on a person from full name, DOB, street name, school history, whatever - that’s enough to get a foot in the door if they’re lax about their security (which I imagine people who give out their uncensored IDs to internet strangers likely are).

Everything we do online and in life ultimately has risks, but there’s things worth those risks and things not. Not to mention levels of risk. I’ll give my information to open a bank account because the level of risk is lower and the result is beneficial. The level of risk in giving some random discord owner my ID is not worth it because I have no idea what their method of protecting my information is and dragon porn is not worth something going wrong.

That said, if censored IDs were what’s being requested for this server than yeah, while I still think it’s weird personally to require that, it’s less risky (albeit still easily circumvented, thus making it pretty useless for this purpose). But it sounds like Dakkokki was accepting any ID and not requiring them to be censored, which is pretty concerning.

You guys know dreamwidth logs IP addresses and that's how this place moderates, using those IP addresses. If you're all really worried about being doxxed by a random I hope you're using a VPN to post in here because an IP address can give so much more info and the mods/admin here are much more 'some rando' than this discord server

Except IPs can be the same across large swathes of cities, and doesn't tie back to one person in particular. I do agree that VPNs are a great privacy tool and people should use them.

They can be but not always! Many people have been doxxed and very much hurt because their IP Address was leaked. The same can be said about this discord situation.

IP address: Tells me what state, and POSSIBLY what city you're in. Does not give me access to your address, birthdate, name, or photo.

Actual license: All of the above, including height, weight, hair/eye colour, and even if you're a veteran/organ donor, etc.

If it assuages your worry, vasemod and I only use IP addresses to identify whether same-anoning is happening, or to keep tabs on problematic repeat offenders.
