Ugh I still have this person blocked for the other UMA thread drama they started. I can see quoted replies where they're just being a headass, but is it worth unblocking so I can read?
"this person blocked for the other UMA thread drama they started" This is the first I've heard of Disteerily being involved in other UMA thread drama, can you drop some deets?
They were involved in that whole stupid thing on the "User Below Me Gets UMA Edition" where Sinjin threw a tantrum because the game would occasionally stall for more than 10 hours and started putting together a public blacklist on the first post of skins that were no longer allowed to be posted because they were "thread killers." It was weirdly vitriolic the way it was worded and ended up getting them in trouble.
Disteerily was one of two people who defended the decision and in fact argued with Aequorin about it. Absolute muppet behavior.
What's with Disteerily's attitude in the opening post? He learned not to directly link skins he has a problem with, so that's progress if nothing else.

i was really curious what skins they could be talking about, but i'm unfamiliar with Undertale beyond that there's a skeleton named sans. It does look like there's a 'smiling' partial skeleton skin named "Sansational" but that seems like it could fall under fair use, especially since it's part of a whole series the UMA artist did of partial skeletons of different breeds. like, big whoop they made the name a pun. i don't think puns are enough to trigger a case of copyright infringement??
then again, i'm not a UMA artist so idk how often/easily skins get rejected for IP issues.
There's a snapper-m skin called The Bad Guy that bears a strong resemblance to the king from deltarune (also made by Toby Fox), and I think there's a ridgeback-m skin based on the character spamton from deltarune part 2. Other UMAs I've seen that appear similar to copyrighted material include a series of splatoon-themed aether-m skins and a skin based on Luffy from one piece (which the artist had to partially recolor for approval per mod request iirc). I also believe a missingno.-themed ab-m skin was printed before getting removed/banned(?) for copyright reasons.
The missingno skin was removed due to using the sprite from red/blue/yellow, which is still nintendo property, technically. also knowing how batshit nintendo is about their IPs i wouldn't be surprised if they would throw hands over something like that.
also adding to the whole convo above - there are many, many skins based on hoyoverse characters that range from "uses common design concepts and pallette to signal their connection to the character" to "altered the character to be just legally distinct enough"
which is honestly something i couldn't give less fucks about personally, literally just let people have fun if skinmods allow them, because SURELY they would recognise something as popular as undertale and genshin characters. people make fanskins usually because they love a character strong enough to do so
I had a skin named "King in the mountain" I made in 2015 that modified the head of tundra M to have long white horns and a yellow mane and beard. it was removed a few months ago for copyright violations
I've always seen it as a plausible deniability thing. Smething like a missingno sprite is too distinct to be anything but. The Sansational one? It's a generic grinning skeleton mitif they drew with a tongue in cheek reference to a character. But, in some cases, if you don't reference something in the name and it's general enough like a piece of clothing, it can be let slide as a custom.
