I was in fact specifically prioritizing physical items or items that accrue value. A more reasonable counter to my argument (which a couple other anons in fact pointed out) would be in comparison to other digital games, e.g. whaling in genshin or something—and yeah, in comparison to that, I definitely agree that it feels better to support a site like FR. I still personally think it's super unwise to spend money on FR to that degree, but I do personally financially support the site by buying gems from time to time, myself.
But, there are a great many other things that people spend money on, including lots of money at once, that don't accrue value, or are physical objects.
The meal I mentioned, some restaurants can charge, to me, ludicrous amounts for a single meal. I just did some quick googling, but there is a single food item (I presume) that goes for 25K USD. It is a taco. There is a chocolate pudding that is 10K more expensive.
The most expensive restaurant, according to google, is a 2.3K per person 20 course tasting menu.
Sure, you can find it strange, and as I said earlier, ludicrous, for people to spend their money in such ways, but it is their money, and if they have it, let them spend it on their hobbies.
I don't really see why it has to be in comparison to another video game, because the point is, the person is spending their money on their hobby.
While I don't agree with some of the predatory habits done by some of the other video games (gachas, FOMO, etc...), people spending money on those are still spending it on things they like to do. Whether it is healthy for them is not up to me to say, but rather the people around them.
So, yes, it may be unwise, but I agree with the person you were replying to that there are a great many worse things they could be doing with that money than spending it on a pet site they presumably love.
