Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

what the fuck is your damage.
honestly, there's some insane dog in the manger behavior in this thread and it's really disappointing to see.

[deep breath]

ok. trying to put a more productive spin on the replies here:
Seemingly a lot of people feel like skin contests should be run like scholarships (i.e. taking into account not just talent but also a sense of being "disadvantaged"). While a program like that would be very cool, it's not what a contest is. I don't think it's appropriate, fair, or considerate to hold "the contest is run as a contest, not a scholarship" against the artists who win, much less suggest there's some kind of pepe silva-ass conspiracy between them and the staff.

888 and MV clearly enjoy making contest entries, and that's wonderful! Both of them would make far more profit just printing their entries through their shops. It is completely boggling to me that people aren't happy that they continue to want to share their work this way, meaning it's possible to get your hands on their UMA art for 35kt instead of a cool 850g.

"The phrase "dog in the manger" is an idiom that means someone who selfishly keeps something that they do not want or need, just to prevent others from having or enjoying it."

i'm guessing you mean, you think all the people who've been complaining aren't uma artists? kind of hard to judge that on anon

I mostly mean it to refer to people who are newer or otherwise less experienced artists who don't have the skin/accent-making skills to succeed in a contest format, with a side of non-artists who are angry on imagined principle.

—though really, I think my core points about "yikes, people are being really nasty" and "on the other hand, maybe these different perspectives on how contests should be structured are behind the negativity" stand, regardless of how well you think my offhanded aesop reference works.

i wasn't criticizing your literary skills, i asked a clarifying question. i have no horse in this race but your comment stood out to me because i'd never heard that phrase before

i don't care to continue on with it, cheers for the knowledge tho

so, true story, back in grade school I ran out of the school library's supply of novels with animal protags, which were pretty much the only thing I wanted to read, so I... checked out and read a huge collection of Aesop's Fables.

years later, I am still questionably blessed with the power to make references that make me sound like a grandma.

People are upset that staff continued to choose them as contest winners when there were many other entries arguably more deserving of a win. Getting the UMAs for cheap is not really relevant.
In my opinion, "When The World Was New" looks sloppy and rushed. There were several other entries that were on theme and more polished that didn't win. Yet, 888 still won. To your point: if the contest is run like a contest, purely based on effort, skill, and fitting the theme, then why did so many qualified entries lose to one that has very noticeable errors (see the halo) and fits the site art style less than others?
I have no idea why staff continues to pick them over others, but the outcome of this contest is only proving the point of every person who suggested staff was playing favorites before. That to me is far more unfair than suggesting staff give two more contestants a chance to win more often. It's easy to see how this behavior could be discouraging for future contestants.

Honestly, I do think that 888's auraboa winning entry is a little surprising? I'm a fan of his work in a general sense, and it's not what I usually expect from him in terms of creativity and complexity (though at least it's VERY on-theme for Earth, and thematic strength looks to have been the single biggest factor in deciding winning entries this time around).

In this case at least, I personally blame the unspoken rule that the new breed will get a disproportionate amount of entries into the winners' circle, rather than staff favoritism of 888 specifically.
I seriously wish that judges would let that rule drop, or at least shift it to "at least one entry with the new breed should win," rather than "at least 2, ideally 3 entries with the new breed should win," which is how things currently seem to go. Or, at the very least, staff direly need to take this kind of thing into account with breed release schedules, because either way the result is that we get forced, rushed entries and a feeling of unfairness.

(Re: UMA vs. site skin cost specifically, while it might not be relevant to you, anon, and that's totally fair, I do think it's relevant to the overall discussion here, since there's at least one anon suggesting some kind of deception on the part of 888, ~manipulating~ contestants into not creating art for the new breed, as if there's literally any advantage to him in doing that.)

i took a look at his submissions and he actually made another auraboa entry that's way better looking than what won? i'm actually shocked they chose the pillar one instead lmao https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/skin/3285797/24#post_55535012

oh! this one's easy, actually.
"cairnlich" probably would have been a shoo-in, except... "earthwyrm" already won in 2022: https://www1.flightrising.com/game-database/item/47885

(sidebar but this is making me realize how unjust it is that undertides don't have Fishbone yet. hopefully it's in the works!!)

staff have picked m/f versions of the same skin for future festivals, why not this one too? most recent example is Bumblebee and Fumarole Frieze

honestly, the drama and bitching about this will continue until something changes. there's no way around that. and i guess they both wanted to change something with that own contest hosted but ultimately that one now shat the bed, didn't it.
we had this topic for what feels like more than a year now, the more 888 and mv wins, the more it will come up. people tried to write threads onsite about this and it's a constant theme offsite.

At this point it's people being mean to those two users. I guess it can also go until they quit and everyone's super happy about it.

you people are fucking wild. "until morale improves" you know the two users you're beating down have morale and feelings too? bm, at the very least, has been recently upset by this comm (judging by their latest tumblr post)

i agree some of you people are literally so cruel for absolutely no reason. the people you're talking about are real people and just because you don't like their skins or anything doesn't mean you have to be so needlessly mean like...yeah it's a drama comm but when they haven't actually DONE anything horrible like alucardpuppy there's no point in continuing to rag on them like. we get it. you hate that they keep winning. submit your own skins against theirs then and stop whinging like children.
