Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

I really thought they'd sit this one out because they were running that gem contest meant to encourage beginner artists, but somehow a slapped-together accent within hours of the Auraboa release won over all of the unique entries this contest. Really disappointing and discouraging behavior.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
i bet it wasn't done on purpose but it looks so calculated.
encourage hundreds of people to make an accent for rockbreakers over the last months. wait yourself until the new breed gets released. immediately slap together something for it. grab up the "new breed prestige bonus" or whatever you'd call that while all the other people made accents for older breeds that are less likely to be picked than the new one.

Re: Rockbreaker's

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
genuine question. do you actually think it looks calculated that they paid 200 people 500g each, in total spending 100kg encouraging people to make more skins, just so they can have an easier time winning with the new breed? "i bet it wasn't done on purpose" yeah because that would be an incredibly stupid way to win skin contests when both of them have shown they've got no problem doing it the normal way. mythicalviper didn't even enter with auroboas

When The World Was New is driving me crazy with the strong dark outlines, the hole in the middle and the bad light cutout around the head.
It goes into the inner crest on the right side, but stays outside on the left side.

DA what drives me nuts is that the staff favorites get away with stuff in their skins that would never be allowed for the rest of us lmao. i have gotten so many rejections for having lines that dark.

Maybe two new people of those 300 could have won instead, then.

29 pages of entries, many of which were absolutely gorgeous, and staff still picked their favorite contestants. Nice way to discourage people from submitting in the future.

I can't BELIEVE staff had double the submissions to choose from this fest, compared to the other fests this year, and still. There they are again.

The two new skin slots were not enough.

Re: Rockbreaker's

To be fair, many many of the submissions were NOT on theme. Even 888 has had to disqualify more than a few entries for *their* contest because folks just slapped some color on a canvas and slapped an earth-themed name on it and called it a day just because the 500g was on the table and their brains turned off from thinking about what the festival contest actually means.

888's entry at least pulls from the site's lore, many entries did not at all... Maybe half of them actually did. That was kinda their whole thing about encouraging new folks to join the contest, be on theme. The fact their "rushed" "flat" entry won on pretty much that alone kinda illustrates that point.

idk. It's not something that I'll be using ever, but I don't see why it shouldn't have won just because it has their name attached.

Re: Rockbreaker's

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
honestly can we just shut the fuck up about 888 and mythicalviper winning? every single fest this comes up like...why are we still surprised it is so old and so annoying to see every time. it's not going to change anything. if it really bothers you send in a ticket to staff about it. it's not either of their faults for it- staff likes their shit and they shouldn't have to sit out anything just because you're mad you or someone else didn't win.

Re: Rockbreaker's

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's fair criticism and people are entitled to their opinions. I personally see no fault in 888 or MV entering the contest and moreso question the fact that the staff repeatedly choose their skins over others. Both are great artists but I can imagine it is discouraging for others. Hopefully in the future we get more accepted skins per festival.

honestly, there's some insane dog in the manger behavior in this thread and it's really disappointing to see.

[deep breath]

ok. trying to put a more productive spin on the replies here:
Seemingly a lot of people feel like skin contests should be run like scholarships (i.e. taking into account not just talent but also a sense of being "disadvantaged"). While a program like that would be very cool, it's not what a contest is. I don't think it's appropriate, fair, or considerate to hold "the contest is run as a contest, not a scholarship" against the artists who win, much less suggest there's some kind of pepe silva-ass conspiracy between them and the staff.

888 and MV clearly enjoy making contest entries, and that's wonderful! Both of them would make far more profit just printing their entries through their shops. It is completely boggling to me that people aren't happy that they continue to want to share their work this way, meaning it's possible to get your hands on their UMA art for 35kt instead of a cool 850g.

"The phrase "dog in the manger" is an idiom that means someone who selfishly keeps something that they do not want or need, just to prevent others from having or enjoying it."

i'm guessing you mean, you think all the people who've been complaining aren't uma artists? kind of hard to judge that on anon

People are upset that staff continued to choose them as contest winners when there were many other entries arguably more deserving of a win. Getting the UMAs for cheap is not really relevant.
In my opinion, "When The World Was New" looks sloppy and rushed. There were several other entries that were on theme and more polished that didn't win. Yet, 888 still won. To your point: if the contest is run like a contest, purely based on effort, skill, and fitting the theme, then why did so many qualified entries lose to one that has very noticeable errors (see the halo) and fits the site art style less than others?
I have no idea why staff continues to pick them over others, but the outcome of this contest is only proving the point of every person who suggested staff was playing favorites before. That to me is far more unfair than suggesting staff give two more contestants a chance to win more often. It's easy to see how this behavior could be discouraging for future contestants.

do you guys think staff look at the thread when picking entries or do they pull all the images for judging with names hidden? genuine question here. because we might be ragging on an issue staff has never 'fixed' because there's nothing to fix, since they're not looking for certain names when picking winners

Re: Rockbreaker's

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
i think it's pretty likely they do the latter because (1) even setting aside fairness, it would make it way easier to judge if everything were streamlined that way; and (2) needing to format the judging setup would make a lot of sense with entries closing the thursday before the festival, rather than friday.

it would genuinely be interesting to know the answer, but i suspect people will find a way to complain regardless. :T

Re: Rockbreaker's

(Anonymous) 2023-11-29 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
With so many people whining about favoritism, it would be hilarious if staff has actually been choosing the winners without looking at any names at all.
