Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

Paw Borough Demo Round 2

Cutting to the chase here: Paw Borough dropped an new cat creator demo with a completely new layout and an overhauled look to the artwork. It's a bit buggy, but fun. I've been following the project since before their Kickstarter campaign, so that means I was there to see the storms of plagiarism allegations over very early website layout mock-ups and other inconsequential shit. With this shiny new demo I can breathe a sigh of relief that this project can better stand on its own I hope. It's still clear that they took a lot of inspiration from Flight Rising in some design choices, but now its a lot more than just Flight Rising with cats.

Genuinely asking, what would you consider "clearly inspired" by FR? I've also been following it and the last update made me feel like it became clearly its own thing, but maybe it's just me. The only parallel I can draw is PB having a gene called Butterfly, but they came up with a unique design on the body so I don't see it as a similarity really, especially since FR has made genes for most recognizable animal patterns at this point (there's like 3 gene pairs that are explicitly feline inspired too), so having them not repeat across pet sites seems like a tall ask.

Off the top of my head the Biggest obvious point of comparison is the borough = eye colors thing which AFAIK isn't really a thing most petsites do/have done outside of just Flight Rising lmao. I think the lore reasoning for it was also a simple and generic "the elemental energy of the land influences the eye color" deal. But that's probably it tbh? Maybe what little we know of Fauna mechanics could be considered to be too similar to Familiars, but minipets aren't just a FR thing in fairness.

I think you're right that as of writing they're both very distinct now based on just what we can glean from the demo, but WRT future mechanics they might still pull some notes from FR. It's just my assumption based on what the game appeared to be like since before the Kickstarter.

Oh and the devs have stated previously in the Discord that:
"Our biggest inspirations are Neopets, Pokemon, Flight Rising, and Blaseball!"

This isn't an indictment or anything! Just pointing that out.

Ahh lmao idk how I didn't think of the eye color idea, that's fair honestly. I haven't followed fauna stuff enough to make a conclusion it's similar to familiars though. Anyway, I do think they're *more* different from FR now than the initial KS promises, which is nice. Hopefully their Guild mechanic they keep teasing will be different enough from FR also.
With cat designs, I do think the new white spotting mechanic and the undercoat being forced to work with the overcoat it pretty unique/interesting. I saw people complaining about the latter, but I really don't mind it. Plus they said they'll go back on it somewhat, so hopefully they'll satisfy everyone with the next update to that system.

I looove white spotting as a concept but don't really use it tbh, or at least I don't plan to use it for my founders. The dynamic undercoat mechanic is.. a much harder sell for me now that I've played with it. I'm very glad they're going to adjust it thanks to feedback, since it really felt like it removed a large level of customization imo.

yeah the lack of an undercoat was a little concerning for me at first, but I'm really surprised by how unique and really nice cats look with only a few genes. i'm definitely willing to give it a chance and see what they do with feedback, and see how it goes with more genes.

it's crazy to see less genes than lorwolf but such a significant difference in quality. the care that they're putting into their available colors is really showing

from my point of view and only having access to the kickstarter updates, throughout its development, it always mixed a lot of existing petsite features and systems all the way down to how the UI looks. not necessarily just FR and not even just the genes, but also gryffs, felisfire, wajas, lioden... to me, it doesn't seem to have enough uniqueness to set it apart from the others. i can be wrong though, and 'if it's not broken don't fix it' is a perfectly understandable way to develop a game. it seems very inspired by a lot of things on the surface and anyone with prior experience playing enough petsites, without access to the site, would be just as prone to making connections to things they've seen elsewhere.
