Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

mythicalviper definitely has great art and very cool looking accents and i am not denying that in any way but the fact that staff picks them nearly every month for a long long time now makes me wonder if they even realize it themselves.
are they just flat out not noticing they keep picking them for months in repeat.
i dont want to say they dont deserve the wins (quality is there!), but a bit of me fears that it's going to come to a level where beginners dont want to submit their pieces anymore.
is it now 16 winners, or is it 14 + mv and brightmyth

"but a bit of me fears that it's going to come to a level where beginners dont want to submit their pieces anymore." you know, I never understood this mindset. staff increased the slots anyway, so even if they both win a fest that's still the original 14 slots that people can win in, right? why do people let other people consistently winning demoralize them from entering?

this is flight rising, people get whiny over just about anything here. i see it as self-defeat too but this userbase isn't really thinking straight sometimes

This... staff could make it 20+ and if those users won, there would still be complaints at this point.

fwiw I don't have a horse in this race at all as someone who hasn't entered in 8+ years and someone could win 6 years straight and I wouldn't notice or care. I'm just answering the "I never understood this mindset" part which I'm assuming to be in good faith.

Creating a festival entry takes most people time, energy, and effort, in a gamble that may or may not actually result in any gain. Whether or not the payoff is "worth it" is up to that individual user, but the more cons that get stacked up (of which "will I even win?" is a big one), the more likely it is that they won't bother entering. I'm not making any judgment here on whether it's right or wrong to have repeat entries, but I think it's fairly understandable that if someone looks at past winners and goes, "Hmm, these people have won a lot, my odds seem lower than theirs," it could easily contribute to tipping the scales against entering.

The same thing can happen with seeing amazing skins that have been already been submitted as well, for the record, not just repeat entries. If there's 16 slots, but the first 3 pages have 8 entries that feel like a shoe-in to that users, that leaves only 8 slots for them to fight over with other users, and can again pose the question of "is this really worth spending my time on entering?"

Whether that's worth it or not is up to the user in question, and their motivations. Financially, it's almost never going to be worth it compared to doing other, more lucrative activities in the amount of time spent, so you also have take that into consideration too.

Basically, tl;dr, there's a lot of factors, and the more negatives you stack up, the less the positives make it feel "worth" doing.

Considering the complaints last fest that some skins weren't good enough, staff just can't win, can they?

they can't. practically everything that's ever needed to be said has already been said over the last... year? and now it's beating a dead horse.

i'm not a fan of how staff picks either and complained here before, but even i know when to shut up and do something about it. i sent in a message through 'contact us' and then a few months later they added more slots and i've started to see more unique winners start popping up. i don't think i'm the catalyst of change or anything, but they're clearly doing something; it's just never enough or too much to everyone else and compromise is never allowed.

I haven't had time to look due real life. Anything getting the same treatment those did last month? Or did staff go back to the old pattern?

people seem happy with the selection this year. i haven't seen any complaints at least, it looks like staff picked a mix of 'typical' anesthetics and some 'uma' ones like the pearlcatcher and the wildclaw.

Based on how people reacted last month, I feel like it’s best if staff doesn’t consider how new entrants are when picking winners in the current system. Losing is demoralizing, but I’m sure having people talk badly about something you worked hard on is even more demoralizing.

I think staff should keep prioritizing quality, but I do think it would also be nice if there were ways for beginners to get recognized.

Maybe they could run a skin contest, separate from the festivals, that focuses on artists that have never won a site skin contest.

I also hope they open the coliseum skin contest again soon, more venues have been added, and it’s a lot less competitive than the festivals.
