Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

ok, but the original convo was about how ai art is bad. using your metaphor, imagine if people were having a conversation about how a clothing chain store uses child labor, and then someone says "well I think their clothes are fun!" do you understand that that looks really bad? do you understand that seems like a defense of the clothing brand?

Dev Update

New Pinglist feature & skin submission revamp details

I hope Vinid can finally find peace.

soooo, the new dev update ...

(Anonymous) 2023-10-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
what do we think of the latest dev update? i'm excited for the skin system revamp and as someone who wasn't around for PVP, i'm interested to see where that goes. but we all have opinions on the most pressing part of the update: the implementation of on-site pinglists, and more importantly, the upcoming removal of mass pings (>12 users).

personally, i really hope staff reconsiders this. i like the on-site pinglist, it's cute and i think it will do quite a bit to curb offsite harassment, but it can't replace customizable pinglists like GASP, G1 hell, ODCA, and so on. the removal of mass pings is going to kill convenient and effective ways of reaching buyers and finding sellers. i'm well aware that this isn't being rolled out instantly and i see how annoyed staff is at the panic, but it's a bad idea and i hope the pushback convinces them to leave mass pings alone.

Ping list change

(Anonymous) 2023-10-26 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So, staff just poke a hornets' nest with a less than perfectly implemented fix to a minor problem of a few users being douchebags

But oh lord, some of these reactions are a shitshow.

mass pings are going to be killed and it’s going to kill the economy

(Anonymous) 2023-10-26 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
i didn’t see a post yet about the recent update - https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/ann/3282852

with the implementation of on-site pinglists today, they’re planning to sunset mass pings in the future. this feels like a massive misstep. do devs understand how much of the dedicated playerbase relies on these player-run systems? systems that users have put actual years into building and maintaining?

i’m not just upset, i’m genuinely angry. this affects so many facets of collecting, buying and selling. dominance is going to be killed, gasp for skins and accents is done, the g1 pinglist will be nullified and collecting is going to be a pain in the ass. it’s so joever… and all due to pinglist harassment that won’t even be completely eradicated - many people still use spreadsheets for things besides pinglists, including orders and dom events. i’ve been considering this from many angles, and they’re all pretty terrible.

Re: AITA to reject a raffle prize?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not an issue at all. totally okay if you want to contribute numbers without bothering with the raffle. I just recommend letting the raffle runner know first so they know to skip you if you're drawn.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
it's so fucking joever man. dom organization is going to shatter to pieces, i know every battle i've participated in required different people using the same pinglists to quickly distribute fodder, and now pinglists can only be used by a single person and are non transferable. and wrt skins and dragons, even if they decide that pinglists can be used by other people, i cannot fathom how they could implement the level of personalization that GASP and the various dragon pinglists offer.

even if they did somehow, offering automated pinglists with adjustable criteria that cancel out, it would still leave out some players. it's hard to articulate, but i think that adding a GASP/ODCA/SIDHA/etc imitation on site would stir up a storm of people asking, "why was 'x' keyword included but 'y' wasn't? what about 'z'?". if staff copied over the criteria from the biggest pinglists, would that be seen as sleazy? when you're extending a community-run tool to the entire website, people who avoided the player-made tools because they didn't account for their specific wants may get very upset at staff for implementing this feature to the entire site, but still having restrictions and keywords that might not satisfy every player. does that make sense? that's one of my biggest issues about killing a community-run tool and potentially trying to bring it on-site. i doubt it will happen, but it's a possibility if staff keeps following this mindset of "bring everything on-site" while attempting to appeal to a very vocally upset chunk of players. maybe my imagination is running away with me :P

sincerely hoping that staff listens to the feedback and keeps mass pings as they are. given that they keep reminding players that this is a future update without a set date and they are listening to feedback (does this come off as passive aggressive to anyone else? i don't mean to read xhaz and aeq's comments in bad faith, but that's how it reads to me. i might be misunderstanding though), i hope that they'll listen to the overwhelming negative feedback about this feature and keep mass pings, perhaps with some options to disable notifications for pings of >12 players.

anon, while I understand your distress, I think it's extremely safe to say that the sheer amount of player feedback means that no, this will not happen.

who knows exactly what solution staff will arrive at, but I feel very confident that they will not sunset mass pings until such time as they can fully replace their functionality.

Re: soooo, the new dev update ...

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
there is no set date yet when the mass pinglists are being sunset, the devs are not saying you cant mass ping anymore, the devs are listeing and trying to figure out a way to make the community happy and move the pinglists on-site

leave it up to the FR community to freak about a new QOL addition to the site and not even properly reading the announcement post and the dev responses

i am personally so sick and tired about people on the site screaming and crying like little kids when the devs add a new feature to the site or change something and act like it is the end of the world, that is what happens if you pull the majority of your users from tumblr and twitter.

i'm just as worried about the ramifications this will have if it does go through without some kind of major change but like, idk i think the team has been pretty good about listening to user feedback and i think its incredibly unlikely they'll just... leave it like this. i need everyone who is "genuinely angry" to take take a nap or have a small snack. chill tf out.

NAYRT but worth knowing that the UMA makers are threatening to go after their wallet if this gets implemented. A lot of the big ones are saying they're just going to stop publishing public skins if this is implemented. Seeing as UMAs are a big driver of gem sales, I think that may alarm staff.

i would, except for how i followed it up in that same post by saying that it wasn't, to follow my metaphor, legitimate clothing and that people were rightfully upset about it being used that way. do you understand?

ayrt

where in my comment did i scream and cry like a little kid? i acknowledged that it's not taking effect immediately and that staff is listening to user feedback. i just expressed that i think it's a bad idea

+.5 in that i also hope the backlash will have staff thinking twice but i've been disappointed by companies making the most obvious mistakes before

i would love for any pinglist revamp to be related to the ah somehow, like say i'm interested in "pre-gened xyx g1s" so i sign up to receive notifs for those and someone posts a dragon for sale there which sends me a ping saying that the sale exists. this doesn't solve all the mass pinglist issues but it would be so convenient!

Kind of, because Dom funds are for communal use, so youd be taking some of the funds everyone raised for personal profit. also if attendants notice they won't accept from you and Dom orgs will instruct them not to accept from you.

Same. Also the people who are like "do the devs even care about the players wah wah" Bitch their literal full time job is making this game that YOU play lmao

rip dom org. anything that is fun about dom is entirely the creation of players, so i hope they at least listen to dom teams if nobody else who’s been affected.

i completely understand and agree with what you’re saying about how any feature that might match gasp would be subject to community scrutiny in an unmanageable way. i hadn’t thought of that, but… yeah, we’re done for. i just can’t decide if it’s worse for skin advertising to die completely or if a site run feature would be an absolute mess, either from the community or from staff.

also, i am genuinely an extremely chill person and i usually agree with staff/also try to be understanding of their choices. but i also feel that the ‘we are listening to feedback, we still have time to make fixes, but we’re not going to meaningfully address the major issues this will cause <3’ response is just not the one we need. it all feels like they had no idea that these mass pings were so important to so many players, which does not give me faith that shuttering them will come with meaningful and satisfactory replacements. we all understand that this feature is in its infancy, but we’ve been saying flight rising features can’t possibly match up to player-run tools. they said to keep an open mind, but literally how can they build anything that comes close to what the community already has?

Re: mass pings are going to be killed and it’s going to kill the economy

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
i feel like if anything, they’ve doubled down on their intention to remove mass pings. going through dev tracker, they just seem committed to ‘finding solutions’ to the issues that players have brought up once they implement the new features, whatever they may be. i am usually very patient with staff, but idk man. this is bad.

Re: soooo, the new dev update ...

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think the source of worry is the 'yet' part of that platitude- mass pings will not be sunset any time soon, but they will *eventually*, which breaks significant parts of huge subcommunities like swipp swap pinglist, gasp, and ESPECIALLY dom

Felt, I'm in Lightning for assorted lore reasons and just generally enjoying the aesthetic (plus cyans/teals are my favourite colours) but lightning eyes are really clashing with breeding pairs that aren't made for them. I've had fun coming up with some pairs that fit a lightning theme but there's so many other vibes I want to go with for my pairs that would just clash a little too much.

"hellsbyte" aka evigt is a user i have some familiarity with for reasons I don't think i'll go into much because it could somewhat out me, but does all involve conversations on discord. I can't comment on the egregious n word usage, but I can shed a light on some of the LGPT-phobic stuff going on. The gist is he was at the time (and might still be, idr how old he is) a teenager from a very bigoted family who was dealing with his own internalised homophobia and transphobia, which is what lead to him making some kind of weird comments on public places and downright awful ones in private spaces like this. He grew up a bit and came to terms with his own identity and realised how much brainwashing had happened from his family. It does made that comment from him about "everyone that plays FR is a girl and the ones who are guys have transitioned" a little ironic in retrospect.

A lot of his behaviour is still pretty reprehensible don't get me wrong, but I do think this makes for some interesting context about WHY he was like that. As far as I know he is trying to move on and be better, but I can't say I've ever kept up or talked to him to find out how that's going.

The fact that some people are saying "Take sales/pings to discord" are part of what's wrong with how the internet is handled, and are responsible for the death of forums on the internet.

And I want to slap them for it.

Re: soooo, the new dev update ...

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Considering that Discord has tools that make mass pings easy while not having a way for malicious people to harass people (Discord roles via reactions that only the owner of the account can opt into), I don’t blame them at all. Blame forums for not keeping up with the times and having functionality that suits people’s needs.

Re: soooo, the new dev update ...

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
While that's true, the main issue is a lack of site coverage.

Staff doesn't do anything about people doxxing/harassing/being a bigot off-site.

So taking sales to discord? Yeah that's not something I'm willing to risk, because it's asking to be scammed.
