Ancients were what killed my interest in the site. Not being able to dress new dragons killed my interest since it removes 80% of the customization (and I'd already pretty much exhausted the older breeds by that point). The site is pretty much just a vessel for getting art with all my old hoarded riches now, and I doubt that will ever change.
Staff have said before ancients do not slow down the release of moderns (up to you to believe them) so even without ancients you'd be in the same position but people who like ancients would be missing out.
Longwinded ancient apparel anon checking in again - ancients aren't really a detriment on the whole site in my case, as I've said elsewhere it would take a long time for me to get bored with creating (and breeding towards) designs for the small handful of modern breeds I especially like. (Yes, I'm that picky.)
But if an ancient ever does come out that I especially like, I could see being a little wistful that this particular cool design/concept can never now exist as a 'full' dragon, where without the ancient system maybe a few years down the line it could have been. And it's somewhat difficult for me to conceptualize how ancients don't take at least some effort away from moderns. The quantity of artists employed by the site, and the time those artists have to spend creating, is finite (and should never be pushed to crunch levels) so how can it not be a zero-sum game?
Not saying this is inherently a bad thing - if more new breeds more often is a primary driver of interest for a significant enough number of players that it helps keep the site alive for all of us to enjoy, that's certainly worth keeping in mind. But it seems intuitive that there would have to be a tradeoff somewhere.
I genuinely don't believe that, no. If they had said "recoding the AH doesn't slow down ancients," sure, that's two different kinds of work and thus two different types of jobs. But new breeds, whether modern or ancient, are both art jobs. Unless they're going to just cut back on staff if they don't have ancients, then I don't see any way that they're not diverting at least some of their work flow potential to ancients.
You really think 3 poses, and a handful of genes for those is what's slowing down the introduction of a new modern... which needs every single piece of apparel and modern gene redrawn for it? If they don't release something, the site will not have a playerbase. People will leave.
I wouldn't be shocked if there is another modern fully drawn right now slowly going through that process. The modern concept itself is the problem. Not the ancients that keep the site alive and active in the interim.
(op) while I wouldn't say they've killed my interest, man do I feel you. sucks to see cool breeds and genes made that I can't use! what would be fine is if I could at least put apparel on them, even if it's wonky
