Longwinded ancient apparel anon checking in again - ancients aren't really a detriment on the whole site in my case, as I've said elsewhere it would take a long time for me to get bored with creating (and breeding towards) designs for the small handful of modern breeds I especially like. (Yes, I'm that picky.)
But if an ancient ever does come out that I especially like, I could see being a little wistful that this particular cool design/concept can never now exist as a 'full' dragon, where without the ancient system maybe a few years down the line it could have been. And it's somewhat difficult for me to conceptualize how ancients don't take at least some effort away from moderns. The quantity of artists employed by the site, and the time those artists have to spend creating, is finite (and should never be pushed to crunch levels) so how can it not be a zero-sum game?
Not saying this is inherently a bad thing - if more new breeds more often is a primary driver of interest for a significant enough number of players that it helps keep the site alive for all of us to enjoy, that's certainly worth keeping in mind. But it seems intuitive that there would have to be a tradeoff somewhere.
