Neopets changed hands

Apparently it's going independent again. They say they will move away from NFTs, make a mobile game, and fix the website.

Interesting.

"That team is part of a new company called World of Neopia, which is led by Dominic Law, the executive who was previously in charge of NetDragon's Neopets Metaverse NFT project: a Neopets NFT collection and an in-development blockchain game. According to the blog post, Law led the effort to rescue Neopets from the JumpStart shutdown, resulting in the buyout that allowed the old Neopets team at JumpStart and the Neopets Metaverse team at NetDragon "to combine forces and become an independent company" with Law as its CEO.

"Free from the corporate baggage that existed in the past, the newly united [Neopets team] has now been entrusted with the decision-making and overall brand strategy of Neopets, enabling them to work solely on the betterment of the entire Neopets game and community," reads the announcement.

"Transitioning away from" NFT game
Despite Law's previous role as the head of the Neopets NFT game— just a few months ago he said that Neopets has "all the right ingredients for Web3 gaming"— and the $4 million in funding Neopets received from crypto companies earlier this year, the now-independent studio says it's immediately "transitioning away from" the Neopets Metaverse NFT game. Instead, it'll reuse some of that game's assets in a new mobile game called World of Neopets, "a social life-simulation game in which you live your ideal Neopian life from the perspective of a Neopet.

Discount furry second life, ok. I guess that is what think of when I read the words "Neopet Metaverse".

Also lol at everyone that bought a neopets nft

The company adds that the existing Neopets Metaverse NFTs "are all still available on the open marketplace" and that it'll "continue to support the Web3 community that has embraced ownership of these collections," but doesn't indicate what that support will be aside from keeping a Discord server open.

Have a very merry get fucked

Anybody hear about how one of the original creators, Adam (you may remember him also as user "borovan" on Neopets) embarrassed himself recently?

Subreddit r/Neopets (which has always taken the piss out of the Neopets NFTs) has a Discord server. Adam popped into their server to promote his new NFT venture. Predictably, Adam got roasted to high heaven, and he just could not take it. He got real-life angry & started swearing at people in the server. The cherry on top was the photo he sent to the people roasting him - an image of himself, angry, flipping off the camera. I highly suggest we all look it up and laugh.

... You'd think these cryptobros would be used to rejection now, given how long they've been playing the fool! But nah, they've got no cool ;P

Jesus, what a fucking clown.

Jellyneo also had the opportunity to review some messages from a Dragginz Discord server (which again, we will not be linking here), and found some disturbing content. Apparently, Adam has only recently completed a takeover of a crypto investment group (SNS-1 DAO) so he could use it for Dragginz—but the prior server chat history is riddled with anti-LGBTQ+ comments and other disturbing content.

After his run-in with the Neopets community, Adam took to ranting in this Dragginz Discord server, posting deranged comments like "I hope they live forever in poverty," referring to commenters he encountered on a post in /r/Neopets on reddit. He also claimed in a separate comment on reddit that his game will "have a much better environment and moderation than this hell you have created." Again referring to the community and moderators of /r/Neopets and their apparent lack of love for crypto.

At time of writing, Adam has since deleted his reddit account and was banned from the /r/Neopets Discord server.

I don't dive behind the scenes often, but a comment on that page has me wondering.

Is adam trying to say that Treasure Keepers was the reason Meteor games had to shut down? (I liked Treasure Keepers, but loved Island Paradise)

Holy shit I've been reading this on and off all day. I especially love the part where borovan comes in to run his mouth in the comments section, this is some A+ internet drama. Thank you for the link!

No problem! I thought we could use a bit of drama more removed from the usual hijinks, but still juicy and virtual-pet-related enough to be relevant to the content of this website.

And hey, if Adam is out here making a fool of himself... Might as well tune in to witness the bells on his hat jingling as he does his fool's dance, right?

I just saw that Adam is trying to start a new game, and I really hope I don't run into it.

I have been eternally disappointed that Adam and Donna seem to have *excellent* ideas for games. I loved the Twin Skies (think that was the name) idea, and was disappointed when it went down. I **loved** Island Paradise and was genuinely sad that it went down.

But, they seem to have no ability to actually *run* a game/company, so I fully expect anything they touch to either go downhill or be sold off. While being sold off might be good (Neopets had a long run, even if not all of that run was 'good'), it could also be bad (again, see Neopets :P).

Here's the links if anyone's interested:

https://sns-1.net/

Actual dragginz site:
https://yegk3-bqaaa-aaaae-aajza-cai.icp0.io/

No surprise that all the assets are AI generated. Looks like he's anticipating people won't like that, so he's already uh, tried to head off the criticism with this statement on the dragginz site:

"It is certainly a divisive topic, and I don’t ever think AI is going away. We’ve worked with many great artists in the past and will continue to do so in the future. AI’s an amazing tool for an artist to use to help guide a creative vision.

The Internet Computer will have AI smart contracts in the future, and that means we can have provable sets of model training data. You could take original art from a set of artists, create derivative AI art from that training data and then send micropayments back to the original artists. There's always a solution, and these days it usually involves cryptography.

For us though, our aim is to just create the best game that we possibly can with the tools that currently exist."

The 'Internet Computer' will fix everyone's ethical concerns by coming up with at way to pay artists 3 pennies for stealing their life's work. But that doesn't exist and you don't actually care so that's why you're using AI assets, yes very smart Adam, well thought out rebuttal

I see Adam is using the dragginz twitter account to post about about himself while pretending it's not him running the account:

https://twitter.com/SNS1dao/status/1668046740392476672

Dragginz: 👀 neopets dev buys sns1?

PassionPlanet: Who is purchasing? There's still an open bid of 300, sustaining 200, essentially locking everyone's coins...

Dragginz: en.wikipedia.org Adam Powell (game designer) - Wikipedia

truenorth:
Is this confirmed?

Dragginz:
I can't confirm 100%. But, I don't know to many people that would throw 1 million dollars into SNS1 to larp as the neopets creator.

Lol, the actual site triggered my antivirus with a phishing warning. I'm sure it's probably not anything serious because my software is pretty trigger-happy, but gave me a chuckle.
