i enjoy your creature design work, but for me personally yes, I do have a sense of what a dragon "is" (reptilian; should tie into an existing mythos e.g. even if it's not a "western" dragon it should reference a kirin, a lung, etc.). this also seems to be FR's design philosophy—i.e. that one's kneejerk reaction upon looking at the design, even without context of "this is for The Dragon Game," should be this is some kind of dragon.
since your philosophy is more "a dragon is some manner of Beast and beyond that anything goes," obviously that's going to produce different results. (one of the best examples of this for me is with your dragon character design tutorial you did with different skydancer characters: while I liked where you were at with the midpoint of all those designs, by the end most of them read to me as griffins or something otherwise Not A Dragon Anymore. as another example, I adore your veilspun redesign as a Critter, but it's very clearly throwing everything about the breed beyond "the concept is tiny arthropod dragon that isn't a fae: go" out the window.)
and all of that is totally value-neutral! where it instead starts to rub me the wrong way is that you have a habit (or maybe just a way of talking? maybe it's that classic Tone on the Internet thing?) that is like you know best and anyone who disagrees couldn't possibly have well-founded reasons; instead they either must be mistaken in their understanding or simply and fundamentally less cool and enlightened. earlier in these replies you argued that you never claimed your designs weren't niche and in fact niche = better: clearly everyone who read your posts and took them to mean that this would be the most successful direction for FR must just have misunderstood, right? or else only like "safe" designs? it couldn't possibly be that what we enjoy in the context of flight rising could be different from the full scope of Stuff We Like.
—it's not just an art thing, either. i remember the 15 seconds of you being tumblr's main character because you just Could Not admit that you were being a condescending dick to straycatj's landlady, lmao.
