Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

pricing suggestions

does anybody else feel like a wanker when they give pricing advice?

i am on sales pinglists for certain niches of dragons & have been in the market for years, so when i see someone pinging the collectors for overpriced dragons, i am compelled to reply with advice. sometimes these people are asking for prices that are WAY above reasonable amounts, so reducing their prices is really the only avenue to getting a sale, but i always read my replies over very carefully before sending because i don't want to come off looking like an asshole. i feel like most people are hesitant to "correct" others like that, though - does it hurt to get pricing advice like this? no matter how politely i phrase it, i feel like it must sting to have someone tell you "yeahhh bud you're gonna be looking at about 50% of the price you're asking for. yup."

what makes me feel like i'm NOT the asshole is that, when i give this advice, it usually stands on its own, meaning that i'm not following it up with an offer to buy the dragon. i just drop info about the market and peace out. i feel like it COULD come off as scummier if i was swooping in with an offer of half as much as their asking price. sometimes i DO see people doing this - correcting a suggested price while ALSO making an offer - so when i see it, i usually try to put my two cents in there as well. like, "i agree with so-and-so that your dragon would be valued around X, rather than your initial X^2 asking price."

like, i know it's helpful to give advice because you're not going to get a sale if you're asking for 3x usual prices - i'm just wondering how it comes off to other people. AITA? ;P

you definitely dont sound like an asshole

its good to have high hopes, but being realistic about them too. and some people just legitimately dont know much about the everchanging market and price higher because they dont want to accidentally undersell a dragon
even if it stings, it's always better for people to be informed. it helps them out too, because theyll know thats why no one is buying their dragons

the fact that you dont offer to buy the dragon was the deciding factor for me btw, it makes you come off like you arent trying to take advantage of someone

Debatable but I settled on NTA:
On one hand, no one asked you to fix their mistakes.
On other hand, I'm not the best with pricing but I've seen so fucking many threads in dragonshare where other "helpful people" tell how "so unique, you can get so much gems" for the dragon when even I 100% know that their dragons are barely above fodder prices, so reasonable evaluations make me happy. I also noticed that sometimes people ping for the same dragons several times over a month, which also annoys me.

It seems a little rude to me to assume the op of a sale is clueless when they might just be waiting patiently for the right buyer. Nothing wrong with that. :-] I assume that of most players who have been around for a while, and get a lot of "well meaning" flak for their high prices. Newbies would probably appreciate your advice the most, even if it stings to hear their payday will likely be smaller than expected lol.

If you have to ask, it's probably a better idea to just stay out of it, period. You may not think it's an asshole move to give advice as long as you don't look like you intend to take advantage of another user, but other users may not take kindly to unsolicited advice, even if they don't show it. Especially if the advice is directed to a specific user who didn't ask for it than a general thing that gets brought up during a regular conversation about dragon pricing.

There's nothing that sends a stronger message than them not getting a sale for a long time after all, why drag yourself into unnecessary shit?

As for other people coming in with advice and offer to buy the dragon - it really depends on how they do it. If they're backing it up with public sale(s) of similar dragon(s) between unrelated parties then I'd consider it a valid negotiating tactic. If they just came off like they're making up numbers out of thin air then yeah, it looks scummy as hell. Tbh you'd look like a busybody swooping in with your two cents either way so I'd avoid it lol.

Probably NTA but perhaps you might come off as a nosy person.

oh ewww. doesn't seem best to have cross-contamination across salt blogs like that. having different voices/proprietors/rules for content curation across venues is healthy i think.
