Spooky Spite

An important update:

Due to a specific person being a complete child, comments are going to be screened by default.

This is only temporary, and I apologize for the inconvenience- this is going to be a pain in the ass for me, too, but multiple people have come forward about fears of doxxing, and this is the only way to make sure any doxxing is contained.

(This basically will force the doxxer to make a DW account to post any doxxing attempts unscreened, and will let me more reliably report them to DW staff/authorities.)

Again, I apologize, and will be working to unscreen comments as fast as possible, but I'm only one person.

(Vasemod has had some personal issues come up, so I am the only mod atm. Please bear with me until this bit of annoyance has passed.)

Attacking people for that is absolutely not OK, but rejection is a standard part of any artistic process. Absolutely any one (and for that matter, many non-artistic processes at that). Dipping out because you don’t like being rejected doesn’t mean that better skilled people should be penalized. The only way to not be rejected is to keep working and trying.

I’m sympathetic to people who are discouraged. Rejection sucks. But it’s not the fault of frequent winners who are objectively quite good AND are doing their best to provide more resources for the community as a whole so more people can win.

Hey, I'm not saying that there's a problem with the good ones getting picked. I would rather not see restrictions on winners like proposed.

I'm just pointing out that more than one person has seen the discouraged and too intimidated to talk folks. Confirming the anon I replied to is not wrong. They exist.

I agree. There’s no reason to attack or penalize the winners, and MV and 888 have BOTH gone the extra mile to provide resources for other artists. Most artists would let you drown instead.

Even if you want to complain, 888 is one thing with the multi but I don’t get the hate MV gets. I’ve never interacted with them so maybe I’m missing something, but seeing them get piled on every time they win gets really upsetting to see. I wonder if it’s still hyrultia/Linkedin who keeps starting drama about them. Does anyone know if those two have beef?

The anon you replied to and I (the one they replied to) aren't even talking about most of what you're saying here.

I addressed ONLY the question asking "where are all the discouraged people," which denies the existence of discouraged artists intentionally or otherwise. all we did was explain they exist, have talked here before in other posts, and why people don't see them post about their discouragement so much. Whether we agree with your sentiment that "better skilled people shouldn't be penalized" or not, it isn't what we were talking about, and frankly not a conversation I'm interested in having.

it's incredibly frustrating

you keep saying more skilled people and objectively better, which are a bit wild to say esp the latter. No shade to repeat winners, but there is plenty of really good art out there, at the same skill level, unsure why this keeps being ignored?? That's part of what's so frustrating as an audience about this discussion, none of us are talking about people who are unskilled or not as technically competent.

"The only way to not be rejected is to keep working and trying." people are, and are selling out on the skin/accent aftermarket, but eventually dip out because it's just not fun when there's a clear bias to specific peoples' interpretations. If MV's guide is in fact why they keep winning, i would love to see other people follow it and repeat their results, but doesnt seem like that has happened yet, honestly maybe that would be a fun community event idk??

seems like they ARE running a community event though alongside 888?

but glancing at the entries so far it doesn't look like people have been following their guide lmao

nayrt dude seriously it's so fucking annoying how people constantly assume it's about quality when it's obviously not. there's so many great artists who don't get picked, that's the problem.

It's true that it's about more than just art quality. There's also the elements of following the guidelines, fitting the theme, and paying attention to what other entries there are (all things MythicalViper discussed in their guide).

The most beautifully rendered, skillfully executed fire-themed design is not going to win during the Crystalline Gala. If the five best-drawn designs are all on an Imp M base, at LEAST two of them are going to get passed over. If staff chose the best-technically-executed designs, regardless of how well they fit the theme or how many of them are on the same base, I'm pretty sure that would lead to complaining from users who feel their flight is being misrepresented or that the less-popular breeds aren't getting enough attention. (Hell, we already get that kind of complaining - this would just exacerbate it.)

I wouldn't say that 888 and MythicalViper are the most technically skilled artists in the competitions. (Not that they're bad - they're both quite good, but yes, there are plenty of other competitors with comparable skill levels.) What they're good at is playing to the competition, which is a different skill set. (But a learnable one! Which they have been trying to teach other people with their guide!)

I'm gonna be real, I don't think "if the 5 best drawn things are on m imp" fits here. If you actually look through submission threads, the breed variety is always on the rather diverse side. Just because m imp dominates the UMA scene doesn't mean that is only what people submit to accent contests, which is a whole different thing.
However MV won with "female ridgeback wings and back" based accents 6 times, which is literally just them using up the fact that this is one of the least represented combos still.
