Given the recent Firedom shitshow, I figured a list like that would be helpful to Embers thinking of jumping ship and everyone else thinking of vacationing for various reasons. Especially since you can't easily dip out of a flight like you can out of a guild in most MMOs and it seems that dom orgs aren't easily displaced due to a combination of community pressure + dom bank being the way it is lmao.
Going to start of the list with:
- Fire for obvious reasons - Lightning according to another anon here, I don't know the details of that myself so feel free to elaborate and show receipts. - Arcane for the disorganization around dom. It's probably fine if you're a casual player but I feel like the disorganization would rear its head sooner or later. We'll see how it goes for them during their fest and AvL I guess.
god, yeah, I feel like starfall and avl being (relatively) close together really is going to be the gauntlet that reveals a lot about arcane dom, in terms of how well (or poorly) it can work in its current state
Plague isn't bad, but I can't speak for the discord; I haven't been in it for years after leaving it when Mercedes was a mod, so I have no idea how it is now.
Dom wise, Plague's pretty good.
I was in Ice for a bit, they're not as dom oriented anymore but when they go for it, they're pretty well organized. Discord is busy, and some of the mods can be pissy if you post something someone else already posted, so you like... have to dig to make sure you don't piss the mods/backseat modders off, but otherwise it's not bad.
Every flight is going to have people that don't like the way the current leads are running dom. It is impossible to please everyone and getting competent reliable volunteers is harder than it seems. Let's be real. Dom is mostly broken and no one is battling. The Ice v Water battle is the first one in how long??
If you want to base flights to avoid on dom drama posted here, then you'd pretty much have to list them all. What about the droplets that called the people who were disappointed the Water/Wind push was cooperative instead of a conquest "vultures"? How many times has someone brought up Earth farting a couple of exalts and taking dom from a flight not offering a PB? Several dom teams are a volunteer or two away from dysfunction at any given point. All it takes is someone who doesn't mesh with the team and likes to argue to fuck things up. Or someone who is volunteering for the wrong reasons, whether it's ego, status, control issues, or whatever.
I wouldn't personally want to switch to Fire right now, but making a list of flights to avoid is obnoxious.
There's a difference between not liking how dom leads do things, and recognizing and hating that everything about the way dom is done in the flight, is disorganized with zero to little communication between the leads/team and the flight, the leads/team themselves, etc. Maybe one or two of the leads frequently go incommunicado for long periods of time, then pop back in to say how sorry they are, life got away from them, etc. Maybe, at the same time as this, the leads are also very resistant to or hesitant to change. It could be any number of things really. To my mind that stuff is a greater concern than the not liking how dom leads do things. Granted it's all of a kind really but to me the concern is more about things as a whole rather than how individual leads do things. I know i for one would love to know which flights have more open and more frequent communication and ...for lack of a better way to say it, can be effing counted on to do what they initially set out to do, and to do things regularly. I don't want to be in a flight where i am constantly worrying about if x program is actually going to be running for our push on sunday, on a friday, because nobody has bothered to communicate this or ping for people!
You can have a dom team that is great at communication and is still shit behind the scenes. You can also have a dom team that seems to be resistant to change, but just knows the result already of said change and how it won't work for their flight. The point I was trying to make is that it's completely subjective. You are going to find people in each flight who absolutely hate how their dom team handles everything. If we were to make a list of flights to avoid based on someone hating everything about the way their flight handles dom, you'd still have to put every flight on the list.
I get what you are saying. It is nice to know not to switch to a flight where the team is completely unreliable. I just think it's going to be difficult to narrow down which flights are wholly deserving of the "avoid" label.
I think Lightning has gotten better, fortunately. Kywren, one of the new orgs, is doing a great job, and they put up a strong showing in their battle with Wind.
From the outside it looks like Kywren *is* the lightning dom team. I have no idea what's going on in the flight or behind the scenes so take it with a grain of salt, but Kywren was at bare minimum the thread runner for the OOFR, Foddart, RNG adopts and the Scavenger Hunt. The OOFR is still drawing prizes too. Kywren you're a rock star, just make sure you're not pushing yourself too hard ok?
Lightning flight member who's decently active in dom here. There are other dom leads that are spread out across multiple programs, some in-flight only. Kywren also isn't the only person handling (some) of their tasks. I know before sometime last year everything was pretty pathetic but the team really has pulled itself together imo and I do genuinely enjoy participating
Honestly, as the anon who has issues with lightning, I do not presently have issues with how I see the flight being run and don't really see it as avoid this flight.
My beef is that Rowan is still involved and is an asshole, thus my outflight support goes anywhere but lightning.
