that one person in the replies is so funny, calling the advice "condescending" as if it wasn't meant to give more artists the knowledge they need to increase their chances of winning the contest
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
yeah lol. I almost wanted to point out that small artist =/= bad artist. Sorry but if your art sucks then I don't want it on a festival skin/accent because staff is supposed to play the role of an encouraging parent. Especially when those are usually the only skins and accents available to poorer players.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
Wasn't there an anon here on a dom thread that said another anon's advice (which is a really good writeup btw) on dom "condescending" too? I wonder if they're the same person. If not, I really hope that's not a rising trend of any well-meaning advice being called condescending because god, the entitlement in that kind of reply... Do they think the people consistently winning contests make it there without failing at least a few times? They even stated right in their post that they lost at 4 times before getting their first contest win.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
Literally not the same person. Because I viewed that dom advice as condescending because I was involved with dom and know what other flights do and don't, hence I can evaluate when "dom advice" is condescending, but I have literally no idea what is that accent drama.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
NAYRT I have been involved in dom in different flights and they definitely don't do all of the things on that list. To this day I'm baffled by the flight that expected attendants to pay for PBs with their own funds... I hope they've changed that!! There are also a couple flights that could stand to take the "buy yourself first place" advice to boost morale in their flight. If Arcane stopped profit pushing every month and did more PBs it'd really turn things around for them.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
Same. I think the amount of hate 888 / MV get for winning is super unfair. Staff wants to pick the highest quality submissions to win - this means theme, style, skill, etc. If certain artists are consistently making high quality submissions, then yeah, it makes sense they’re going to win a lot.
As a personal anecdote - I used to participate in the fest accent submission threads. I never won. This was years ago, and I can recognize the reasons I didn’t win now: issues with quality, being off-theme, etc. Instead, I found a lot more success making my own things, and I ended up improving a lot/finding my own niche because of that. I’m having a lot more fun now than I ever would have if I just kept trying fest accents!
If you’re always putting yourself in a position to compare your art to others, of course you’re going to have a bad time. Losses are more painful and wins are more meaningful, but you lose sight of any progress you’ve made as an artist, because it only matters how your work fares against someone else’s. Insert that thing about two cakes. I promise most players don’t actually care who wins, they just like getting cool skins. (I know I always buy plenty of fest rejects on top of the fest skins.)
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
SA That's why I said most, but it's still not gaming the system to make skins for unpopular breeds. They're not manipulating the selection process or anything.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
I'm glad they posted this! I never liked how seemingly upset people got about how often they won, when it's clear they're just really good at catering to what the staff are looking for in fest skins. What sort of themeing, how to reduce competition etc. These are things SO many people don't consider enough whatsoever so of course they get upset when someone who does understand wins a lot.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
yeah same. I'm glad they finally addressed the topic. I don't think MV has actually spoken out on it before and it's great to see so many people in the reblogs consider trying out the contests again.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
uh, hot damn, mousemod responded twice to MV's guide. looks like staff really liked it? tumblr link https://www.tumblr.com/aequorin-fr/724742615582588928/fr-skin-contests-and-you-and-me
SA first response: "*checks the tag* *sees post* *reads post*
Whoa.
mythicalviper_fr and 888, in case you had any concerns about posting this on the site, please know that you’re in the clear to post this very thorough guide on the skin and accent contest—as based on your personal observations and contest experiences—on the Flight Rising website itself. There are a lot of new and developing artists on the site who aren’t on Tumblr and may find it helpful!"
second response: " Maybe this post will be immediately outdated as staff reads it and changes how the festival decisions are made.
From what I can tell, all that you've done here is:
- Remind folks that winning submissions become official festival items highlighted on our front page; the expectations are higher. - Call attention to the words we've used ourselves in the contest guidelines/posts and how we've described the Flights. - Shared your own observations and personal experiences of submissions vs winning submissions.
In other words, none of this information is hidden or secret. We're quite impressed with the overall attention and care to detail here—not only to the submissions that won, but also to the contest guidelines and established lore. We hope the guide you've both put together helps the young and growing artists in our community!"
thoughts on staff getting involved in this?
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
I think part of the point of the guide was to show that there is a way to game the system, and thus to point out that maybe staff should broaden their view of what festival wins should be like, but it seems in these replies that staff is doubling down on wanting only the site-enforced flight aesthetics for the festivals. Sad, but sort of expected.
Re: Mythicalviper posted a breakdown of their accent contest strategy
yeah, 888 pointed out that they hoped different entries would start winning after staff saw the post. i'm worried that if MV posts their guide on the forums the way mousemod suggested, people are going to see it and think only skins that follow these guidelines can win. then we'll get even less variety than before :/ we get some funky ones every month that don't follow any of the rules they listed and they're pretty much the best ones every time (thinking of that stonecarver abberattion and the deer pearlcatcher from last year)
if they scare people off from making those sorts of entries we're going to get bland recycled concepts year after year
i'm glad staff responded - both to say that they appreciate the effort & thought put into the writeup, and to clarify that it's rule-complying/site-acceptable relevant information. essentially, "very cool that you posted this! we hope it can inspire more artists to participate as well :)" i think it's great to add staff voice to this, because people like to say that staff "plays favorites" or whatever, but clearly they want to encourage more artists to participate while also maintaining a high-quality standard for the accents & skins they choose as winners. lord knows we'd be ablaze in complaints if staff actually awarded "pity wins" to less-polished entries in the name of avoiding submissions from previous winners. in my opinion, the truly "unbiased" approach is to judge entries against each other WITHOUT considering win history. that's what staff is doing. MV & 888 are trying to help other artists out. they get an inordinate amount of hate just for being successful. jealous janines just jerking all over the place about it. and rather than being hateful back, the artists chose instead to pass on advice. if you ask me, that's a VERY classy permutation of what could've been something more like "if you don't want me to keep winning, how about YOU submit some winners instead" LMAO. seriously, shouts out to MV & 888.
imo staff got involved from the wrong side - it seems that they kinda support gaming the system as another anon put it instead of, you know, fixing the "system" that has ways to game it. I predict that fest skins now could become even more same-y.
madlad is actually giving away 500g a person for entering skin contests now. honestly, this is pretty of cool of them. i've never entered a fest before but they posted a lot of resources and it makes me want to start.
