Acknowledging death as a part of life isn't really that grimdark but I guess an afterlife of slavery to your god is pretty edgy now that I think about it

Uhh... Exalting is not the same as the afterlife. They are not synonyms. Exalting is a willing choice to serve in life, not slavery. Like a vocation. You are implying death that is not part of the lore in exaltation.
