NAYRT Eh, I spend like 2 hours on FR every day, so I feel like even $200 is a fair price based on the hours of enjoyment I get (and the cumulative experience of being involved in a community longterm, instead of a one-off event), especially when compared to many other paid leisure activities. That works out to $3.33 per hour of enjoyment which is cheaper than even like, a latte.
Of course, I don't have this disposable income, but if I did, isn't the whole point of disposable income, well, that it's disposable? If someone thinks their money is better spent on something other than FR, they most likely wouldn't be spending it on FR.
i'll be frank: i think in some ways it sticks out to me more because this anon is a student, and almost certainly not supporting themselves if they can afford to put this much money from a part-time job into FR. it feels… idk, really privileged i guess? to be able to just dump that much money into dragons when it's not really your own budget on the line, now is it. i am still trying to decide for myself whether this specific component of my reaction is fair.
anyway, you say $3.33/hour/month is reasonable, but for my part i'm using an MMO subscription as my comparison, i.e. $15/month (for potentially far more hours of gameplay, and even more community). granted! FR is of course a way smaller company, so expecting the exact same level of bang for your buck isn't fair. but surely you can nevertheless follow why anon's choice feels like a "candles: $3000" thing to me.
(also, fwiw, genuinely unsure how this works out monetarily from the UK perspective/not having a disadvantageous conversion rate, but anon is actually describing spending more like $250/month.)
I mean, wouldn't it be just as 'privileged' if Student Anon dumped that amount of money into partying every month? Honestly, this whole thing comes off as people sneering at Student Anon for being a introvert/gamer/nerd instead of a Manly Hard-Drinking Jock or whatever to cover up jealousy that they can afford to buy that many gems.
i'm also here with you on the anon comm for the dragon game???? why the fuck would "manly hard-drinking jock" be a standard i'm invested in, or anyone else here. that's a complete strawman and you know it, anon.
obviously i can't speak for Literally Everyone but no i promise this is not coming from "jealousy"; i could afford to whale at this game on the same level as the student anon if i put all my "fun money" into it. i just personally think it's very unwise budgeting, and am kind of boggled that this is such a blisteringly hot take apparently.
It IS privileged, yes, but you can say that about anything... One person's exorbitant purchase will be reasonable for someone else bc the value of something is so subjective depending on your financial situation.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)for real tho how is spending disposable income on leisure "unwise budgeting"
assuming anon isn't like, going without food or other essentials it really doesn't matter what they spend their disposable income on
