right, to me it seems like defeating the "clarity of speech" purpose behind tone tags if understanding them requires memorizing a list of abbreviations. my absolute least favorite one is "/pos" to mean "positive." like, you're telling me you don't look at "pos" and read it as "piece of s___?"
Literally yesterday I saw POS used and thought that, and the person meant Point of Sale.... I could never figure out what the tone tag was meant to mean :P
(same anon) Point of Sales at least actually makes sense and is used widely in the adult world. it's the fancy name for cash register, ahaha. /pos 100% reads as "okay, i'm done being a piece of shit" LMFAOOO
Yeah, I sort of guessed it meant point of sale (though the other definition fit that particular use) and it made sense.
It is just, that is why I hate abbreviations and acronyms.
Three little letters can mean so many things. We already have three for POS alone.
People get used to using them, then get made when people don't immediately understand what they mean, because their frame of reference is different from the people's who are reading it (as someone who isn't that knowledgable about the business world might not know what point of sale is, let alone knows it means a cash register, and thus won't even think to associate POS with it).
Too many people use these abbreviations without bothering to explain what it means first before they use it.
