Hey.

Edit 2/1/2023: A new small guideline that has been added to the rules- please include direct links to profiles, especially if the user in question is being shady, since they go 'invisible' when FR locks/bans them.

(It's not mandatory, but it helps folks get those juicy details.)

Makes for a heck of a morning read, eh? :P Lol, I check in every few weeks, usually there’s only a handful of new flat pages; hell of a surprise to see like, 20+ this round.

Love the visual of FR admins in witch huts, Baldwin-brewing up the next big release... It really is true, though, ancient speculation can be all over the place and it’s a fun testament to all the potential! Haven’t had half as long a stint on any realistically-based sites to know how they keep interest up, though as you said it’s probably quieter anyway & presumably the audience they’re serving isn’t as interested in Big New Shiny things anyway.

Took another swing at the PB demo and hm, y’know, I wonder if it’s the fact they’re semi-realistic cats that makes the style dissonance extra jarring? Dragons can be anything, even (to some degree) fantasy canines or felines can be anything, but PawBorough’s got drastically different facial proportions between two not-as-fantastical breeds (Shorthair and Longhair). Idk, thinking out loud; at least the soft shading & fur detailing look consistent, but that’s surface dressing in comparison.

If it’s not skirting too close to de-anoning, what do you write about? :O
Also, the CS point thing sounds, uh, pretty backwards? “Anyone” can do a scribbly doodle, too, and for faster artists a sketchpage would be a free ticket to currency-farming. Idk, I am just in very different circles apparently, I cannot wrap my head around the concept of currency-farming via writing [profile] _@. Writing being devalued in general, sure (like, FR people complaining (justifiably so) about less interest for lore shops or hatcheries), but if you’re trying to judge effort....

Aw, premium-heavy games are a no-go for me, but the alchemy & item-pickup systems sound neat :o But yeah, there’s something to be said for comparatively simple art like that, ’specially in the ages of everything being shiny/polished/extra-detailed/what-have-you. As for Flowergame, I’ll have to see if I feel like picking up another site, but it’ll definitely be in mind next time the itch strikes! A+ looks very quaint. What other hidden gem mechanics/sites do you know about?

lol yeah sometimes the comm is dead and then it explodes but dies again. mini big bang of sophisticated salt

honestly imo one of the best things a site can do is build anticipation, it keeps people coming back, in a way? the admins were REALLY smart to have monthly festivals and each time you get new shit. people get hype for it, and its spawned dom events, community building, etc
people will build circles around things to speculate on, theorycraft, etc and it helps keep a playerbase feeling "fresh". look at all the sites that don't do anything similar and see how theyre... not flourishing so well, like magistream

i think youre on to something with the semi-realism! when you add realism into the mix, it's extra important to adhere to one style, so even tiny stylistic changes from artist to artist can look jarring. kind of like uncanny valley, in a way? i do hope PB finds its legs and succeeds, though, even if it still has flaws like that on launch

as for my writing, i write a lot of erotica, lol. i like to write intimacy and closeness, and put a lot of emotion into it, and people will certainly pay for that! i also am not shy to write most kinks, and i can do it well, so i can cast a wide net lol

for CS, they dont really judge effort when it comes to writing. in most cases they assume writing is no-effort in my experience, so any art thats not a doodle is considered more effort, so it just kinda... Sucks. it especially sucks when they impose a word count minimum
ive even been in CS where you can get 10 currency per 100 words.... whereas a doodle will get 100 currency. and for perspective, a LOW price for my writing is 1c per word / $1 per 100 words. that's for the equivalent of a 'doodle', but even then, a rough draft of 1000 words is a fucking lot, just to get the same amount of currency some colored chibi doodle got. whenever i get involved in a CS, i campaign for better writing rewards by laying out industry prices for things, how much effort goes into it, etc. im usually successful in getting at least a fair compromise

i cant do premium heavy games either so i feel you there lol. as for hidden gems... well, first, i wanna pour one out for my homies that didnt make it. taleofdragons, aluriya, talesofostlea, and projectnyoka. yall will be missed. they were all really cute, i loved aluriya in particular for its watering game where you could water stuff and get pets :( and project nyoka is sci-fi which doesnt pull up often when it comes to pet sites. tale of dragons was like dragcave but better lol
i think the biggest hidden gem has to be arillio.com, i havent logged in in forever though. it's an animal-based survival game in a post-rabies world, it has some cool shit in it but also some mechanics i dont like (like dying). i dont even know if the site is updated anymore or if you can log in, but its worth checking out. misticpets was good too but the site is currently lookin like garbage, no idea what happened to them there. pixpet is also a really cute one i dont see around much, its like pokemon (or, i guess, gpx) but with pixel pets and some fun features like housing
khimeros isnt a "hidden" gem per se but i dont see a lot of people playing it, in the pet site circles im in? which is weird to me, i think its worth checking out. i love the collection mechanics

Oh, you are SO right about the anticipation & monthly festivals. That’s at least half of what keeps me on FR (other half being that dragons never die, no real punishment for taking a long break); new stuff to collect & not premium-currency-walled! Community events aplenty! Also damn, have not heard anything about Magistream in ages (seems clicksite people have moved to... Last Frontier, I think it’s called? something scifi-sounding, iirc), wouldn’t have guessed it’s still kicking.

Uncanny valley, that’s it. Funny enough I remember getting hit with that after logging into Mweor for the first time in years (newer breeds had definitely been done by a new artist, bigger eyes with more sparkle & subtly different lineart) but after a few days of playing I got about 50% used to it (well. for 1 of the 2 breeds lol; no knock on the artist(s), just not my thing). Who knows, maybe people will get used to PB and/or they’ll change enough for it to not stick out as much.

All my kudos for the erotica/kink writing, tbf, that shit’s hard (uh, pun not intended). Get it $$$

God, I truly do not get the CS writing evaluations there. Glad to hear you’ve had success with the campaigns, though; other writers must appreciate it >:o

Aw noo, I remember hearing about Tale of Dragons ages ago, never got around to checking it out more thoroughly... Some of these look like they were around for a long time before dissolution, too :c What usually spells death for petsites, finance? lack of interest, both? It’s a wonder some of the smaller ones you’ve mentioned are still around, honestly, all the more to ’em.
Arillio’s a neat concept; the previews remind me of Wolvden(/Lioden, ig, only played the wolf one), though the premise sounds a lot more actively perilous than “your creatures will slowly and anticlimactically starve/get sick to death.” Does seem to need a code to register though, ah well. Misticpets seems to have lost its background image, and I’ve seen some people on FR mention Pixpet & Khimeros! Ugh, so may cool sites and so little time, but those are going on the list too >:,3c

Just want to say something about Arillio

I play another game site with the creators of Arillio (or pretty sure they are creators, at least the artists) and last I heard, they wanted to revamp it and bring it back, but it has been a while since I last heard about it. I liked it as well.

Khimeros, though nice (I play another site where at least one of the artists that originally worked on Khimeros also work) is a bit too premium heavy. Not so much in 'you have to pay premium to do anything' but more 'pretty much anything nice coming out is for premium only'. There was also a bit of an issue (I believe) with the owner of Khimeros offering things like gen1 imps for artists to draw stuff for Khimeros.

I also love the collection mechanics, and you might check out Leayph. It should have some what the same aesthetic as Khimeros (as, from what I understand, the same people were involved at the beginning) and I *think* it has sort of a collection mechanic. It has been years since I played it (just didn't click with me, it isn't a bad site).
