You guys know dreamwidth logs IP addresses and that's how this place moderates, using those IP addresses. If you're all really worried about being doxxed by a random I hope you're using a VPN to post in here because an IP address can give so much more info and the mods/admin here are much more 'some rando' than this discord server

Except IPs can be the same across large swathes of cities, and doesn't tie back to one person in particular. I do agree that VPNs are a great privacy tool and people should use them.

They can be but not always! Many people have been doxxed and very much hurt because their IP Address was leaked. The same can be said about this discord situation.

And that's your decision as an adult I'm just very curious how many people who're name calling and getting concerned about a discord server asking for 90% censored IDs and a selfie are also aware of the fact that this site logs IPs.

Most if not all the regulars around here, I would wager. The mods bring it up every once in a while.

Yeah, tbh that's why I bbirthrate. Because I remembered someone bitching about this site not being truly anon. I guess I've just had more experience or close calls with IP address doxxing than sharing my birthdate so I'd be more concerned about that than this.

But there's been no response to anons asking that if it's only the birth date that they need, why use a censored ID at all? Just ask for people's birth dates, because you're doing absolutely nothing to check if they're using a real, verified ID, which is what IDs are for.

I'm far more concerned that this has been very poorly thought out, with zero consideration beyond solving an immediate fear.

I'm mildly concerned about IP logging, but much less so when it's not linked to any cohesive identity. I don't have an email address I've signed up with or a username and password combo I might use on another site that can be linked together with my IP here.

I'm not saying no one can conclude anything about my identity from my IP, they can and obviously the mods here do by checking IPs to deal with trolling and people replying to themselves.

The ID cards are different to me. This may just be my point of view, but I've worked in various places where you get ID copies from people, and it's treated as a big deal. Their confidentiality matters. It's still not clear to me that this is going to be respected, and no one's shown any signs of it being taken seriously beyond a later clarification that they'll be blacked out, which is not foolproof and really prone to user error (see: so many posts with screenshots here or on SMR where some names are missed).

I mean, my response would be to never join any server where I'm asked to share ID, and that's no loss to me. I'd rather talk to people I actually know and somewhat trust about dragon pussy. But you're also not going to hear from anyone who doesn't use this site because of the IP logging, are you?

I've had jobs take photocopies of my ID and by jobs I mean, like, people I'm pet sitting for, not big companies. I mean, these people are giving me a key to their house, it makes sense. This server is giving people access to an adult space with things minors shouldn't be exposed to. Idk, maybe we just have different perspectives but it makes sense to me.

You're not getting a key to anyone's house here. Hotels also take ID photocopies in the US, for similar reasons, but they keep them in a safe. Chances are you're trusting someone you're working for to also keep the ID secure. Admittedly I wouldn't be comfortable with that either, but that is a matter of personal preferences.

I don't believe it's reasonable to place the same trust in someone on the internet on a less than secure platform, and especially not for them to have a Discord channel where they accept IDs. There are so many more ways for a huge range of people to access information on the internet than there are to see a specific photocopy in real life.

lmao what kind of fearmongering BS is this? I've had my IP leaked before (in a situation where I entirely deserved it, so not trying to play the victim or w/e here, tbc) and it was basically harmless, absolutely not comparable to doxxing

Do some basic googling and searching, people have been tracked and seriously hurt because their IP address was leaked.

IP address: Tells me what state, and POSSIBLY what city you're in. Does not give me access to your address, birthdate, name, or photo.

Actual license: All of the above, including height, weight, hair/eye colour, and even if you're a veteran/organ donor, etc.

If it assuages your worry,

vasemod and I only use IP addresses to identify whether same-anoning is happening, or to keep tabs on problematic repeat offenders.

You'd rather one person be able to pretend to be 5 people to agree with themselves? There is no useful info to dox from an IP with no accounts attached.

We don't keep tabs on your location though, that would be extra work that neither myself or Mindless wants to go through to run your IP through an IP locator.

We keep track of IPs to keep troublemakers in check and be wary of repeat offenders.
If you're that worried there's plenty VPNs for cheap or even free out there.

We don't. I listed what an ip address shows me if I bothered to look it up. Y'all ain't enough of a concern to do that shit.

Like vasemod said, I just look at the string of numbers and letters on the comment to see if the same person is arguing with themselves to cause drama, or if the same person is the one being a bigot, so I can delete them and deny them a platform.

I'd like to clarify that when I originally posted about the IP thing I wasn't making a jab at y'all, I was pointing out hypocrisy abt getting mad at being carded and internet safety and being here.

Like I honestly trust y'all, even tho I know nothing about y'all, to not drop all the IPs here or do anything with them. While in this server it's people who regularly interact with their community and are far more open about themselves than y'all and are requiring censoring of the most sensitive stuff. It just seems backwards to me, but I guess since it's about adults and nsfw and not salt that people are more touchy.
