mullvad is a great paid option but if you don't have the extra money to spare then proton VPN is the best free option as far as I'm aware.
I'm sure many of you have already heard of proton but basically its free version is unlimited (you cant choose server/country but you have no data limit) and as far as I know proton has also been proven in court to not be a data thief, if that kind of thing matters to you.
that said, proton seems to have developed some kinda AI thing. It's not forced on you if you download the VPN (in fact it seems like you can only use the AI with paid proton?) but if the mere existence of it bothers you, I guess there's also windscribe and hide.me that give you 10gb a month for free
