What are the ethics (and if not that, the likelihood) of getting someone’s YouTube account banned from mass reports if I know as a fact that the channel owner is a 9 year old with unrestricted internet access and parental SUPPORT in content creation? I have a cousin whose parents are being magnificent morons and encouraging him to make money this way. Unsurprisingly the kid has no socialization ability and no interest in anything outside of Roblox.

unless there's more info here about the nature of the content he's making that I'm missing (from context I assume these are roblox videos, not like... him putting footage of his own kid self online, or even his parents encouraging him to lie and present himself as anything but a kid), YWBTA.

isn't it possible or perhaps even likely that your aunt and uncle are trying to help and support your cousin in his special interest, allowing him to develop additional skills through the process of making and uploading these videos? given that "supervised accounts" are a thing and his parents are apparently closely involved, this seems like a fairly reasonable way for them to help turn roblox from some kind of mindless time-waster into something more meaningful.

so yeah, unless there's some massive other context here, You Would Be The Asshole for starting a deceptive campaign to sabotage your nine year old cousin.

I wish. Unfortunately he is in fact putting his IRL face out there. Not in any way different from any other gaming streamer, but he is NINE.

His uncle and aunt are more acting like Mozart’s dad. They’re enthused that he’s “already making money!” Which is great and all but the kid has the socializing skills of an addled hamster and no interest in improving.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope I am. I’m just worried that he’s going to end up extremely screwed over and there isn’t a single thing I can do to help.

It's your cousin. You could socialize with him, be a good influence, ask him to show you how to play Roblox, pick games that are co-op so he'll want to socialize with other kids more when you're gone.

"the kid has the socializing skills of an addled hamster and no interest in improving"

I can't speak for what you mean by this because he's not my cousin, but some of that is just part of being 9 innit

AYRT

I wish! This is terminally online brain rot, not normal 9 YO brain rot.

And to those asking why I don’t interact with him more - because he lives across the country and I only see him in person once or twice a year. I wish I did live closer!

Terminally online brainrot/9 year old brainrot is the same thing these days

As someone whose kid is 12, it really depends on the kid.

When my kiddo was nine, she was VERY social and wanted nothing more than to info dump on Pokemon and Zelda theories to anyone who'd listen.

Now, at age 12, she's still very social, but she's more selective on the folks she is friendly with now that she's old enough to get Gut Feelings and avoid people that trigger them.

She still will info dump to anyone who'll listen, but she's added Wings of Fire to her pool of knowledge lol.

SHE IS. She's already got a dragon OC who enables the villain. (Darkheart I think his name is?)

She supports dragon wrongs, and honestly, I'm here for it.

those are the correct type of dragons

Omg yeeessss. That's exactly the sort of thing I did when I was her age, back in the glory days of Neopets. Good for her, good for her!

You aren't his parent. His parents are actually involved and allowing this account according to your own words. Odds are, Google won't touch it if reported, as if he's getting paid, an adult is attached.

Leave the kid alone and stop being an asshole busy body. You are not the internet police.

I don't think it's being a busy body to be worried about the safety of a nine year old putting their face on youtube but that's just me

I mean, considering that the user implied they wanted to brigade report a 9 year old's account with false reports when they admit he has parental approval to be on the site... I think busybody is me being nice.

Obviously Google sucks at child safety but if whatever crappy AI system they use detects that a video was posted by a child, it automatically turns off the comments, right? I do get this person's concern, we all know the internet is rife with pedos and social media is bad enough for the average adult's mental health, gonna be even worse if someone's bullying a kid. I remember years ago there was a whole thing on YouTube where people were finding pedos sending each other coded messages on children's YouTube videos

I will be honest, I'm actually less concerned at the kid being on Youtube than I am at him being on the pedo den that is Roblox.

That's valid, I literally just watched a video last night of a Roblox predator getting busted

I think your concerns are valid, and the parents are awful for viewing such a young child as a source of revenue, but I don't think there's much you can actually do about it unfortunately. Even if you got his account banned, his parents would most likely just set up an alt for him.
