It might amuse some of y’all that I came right off of the dev post where Aequorin was saying “it’s AI bots, we’re really trying but it’s an Internet-wide problem” and half a day later my very nice but not super techy boss called me into his office to ask if I’ve ever used this generative AI stuff and what my opinion of it is. I summed it up as “built on theft, we don’t know what it’s doing, and it’s not really doing anything a human can’t do and costing 10 times the price at that”. It was like getting a cathartic little Internet rant but so much better because I know he actually listens when my department tells him stuff.
absolutely flabbergasted that some players 1) seem completely blind-sided by the idea that a lot of those guests were bots and 2) that FR was somehow safe from said bots and therefore also immune to having data scraped from it?
like the first one is not a new thing at all? bots have always made up a large portion of "guest" populations on sites that track that sort of thing (people had guest trackers on early Tumblr ffs). and the fact that certain players somehow thought their writing/artwork was safe from being scraped on fr when sites with way more robust financing can't manage that is?? alarming???
like we already knew FR got scraped once before already due to FR dragons showing up in GenAI works.
