It seems like it really was banned but it must've been for a fairly short time? People were super pissed about it, and it was later in 2014 (september maybe? I don't have the thread in front of me) that staff issued an apology for overzealous name moderation... They don't say what names got unnbanned at that time but it seems like Mulch might have been one of them since there are dragons with that name born around that time (though they could also have been named much later-hard to say). I saw a post from someone saying it was banned because mulch was used to get around another banned name (not the harassment that gets retold). The earliest talks I see of the outrage about Mulch are from Feb of that year, in an old Words on the Wind thread, so it must've been a little bit before then. That I could find on the forums anyway.
Either way it's definitely not the case anymore, named a kid last night just fine with no issue.
