No, they've likely been working on this for way longer than that has been a concern. WebGL has been looked at by browser game devs as a "next-gen" alternative to Flash long before Flash went EoL, but many of them were waiting on browser compatibility to improve. When WebGL was added to mainstream game engines as a one-button export option, the renaissance of play-in-browser demo and jam games on places like itch io really started. I'm frankly surprised it took this long for a pet site to implement client-side shaders using WebGL, but they probably were waiting for more widespread browser compatibility.
This is probably part of why the engineering job application they posted last year asked for experience in game engines as a bonus (not the only reason, but that's one of the few places you're likely to find someone who understands GPU programming/shaders).
