the willful ignorance is incredible to me, too, by lacking the awareness of how their statement isn't reflecting on their own beliefs but instead blaming everyone else for making conservative people into villains after reading any of that thread (if any posts were read at all). maybe if you see pages upon pages of people talking about how scared and in danger they are because of people who share your beliefs (in part or full), you should think about what those beliefs mean to you and if they're really so important to hold in the grand scheme before telling others to set aside theirs just to listen to yours.
it's perfectly normal to feel hurt/scared/upset, etc. because other people do not like your beliefs, and you may also feel persecuted and seen as an enemy because others see people who share your beliefs as an enemy, but it's not an "us vs you" situation until you make it one or act in a way where you cause harm to others (the former in this case). beliefs shape your actions, but you can shape your beliefs. you are not some immutable entity and you are not your beliefs (unless you make your beliefs your entire existence). varnish wants our patience, our time, our energy, and our good faith - all things that are precious and limited - to 'understand' our views, then an equal exchange needs to take place, and they have displayed they aren't even capable of granting patience or good faith when faced with basic opposition. you cannot buy goods without providing money first, and varnish is asking for goods with an empty wallet in hand.
Wow this really resonates with me about how I feel in regards to this situation. I'm not really good at putting things into words but I feel they expect more than they give and it's hard for me to feel sympathetic towards them because of that. They don't seem to be thinking about the thoughts and feelings of the other users who voiced their fears. They just expect everyone to feel for them or just be silent entirely based on their last post to the thread.
I just want to say thanks for writing all this, it's so well put! Reading it made me feel like you took the thoughts right out of my head and made them presentable. 10/10 post
