I'm fascinated by how closely their attitude tracks with the kind of thing I see happen in IRL interactions (or lack thereof). Conservatives vote in a way that will strip rights away, encourage hateful bigots, and just generally make everything worse, then they start spouting nice-sounding words about how they wish people were more open and accepting of those with different views than themself, and isn't it so sad how we can't all just get along??? Like fuck off, idiot, you're the reason why we can't get along. The mealy-mouthed bullshit is so much worse than outright foaming hatred for me. I can see why they're copping so many blocks.

from personal experience with my own family members, when someone says they want to have discourse because they "want to understand", it's really just them wanting the opportunity to retort with their own beliefs and try to convince/coerce you to understand them. it's less about understanding and more about being 'allowed' the chance to rebut your own beliefs.

Tbh, my family is extremely conservative, but lately my mom has been doing her best to properly learn about LGBT+ people and how to correctly use pronouns and such. It's genuinely been such a wholesome experience because I came out as trans to her like five years ago and she's trying so hard to understand, but she's still so confused because google is a bitch and a half sometimes. Actually, two years ago on my birthday, she ended up apologizing profusely for not knowing how to properly refer to me in a gender neutral way in the card since she always called me by a gendered nickname for 20+ years, in the end I ended up giving her suggestions and the next year she used them! It was such a good feeling seeing her improve on something like that.

So, sometimes I feel like it's just overwhelming amounts of new information being thrown all at once and it's hard to unlearn things one has been taught for years on end. It's like a bad habit you're struggling to break. There's always bad actors - more often than not - but sometimes there's a few that are willing to learn.

oh i know there's some trying to unlearn the old and embrace the new, and that it's not as impossibly rare as some people think it is, and that's why i said it's from my personal experience. i have one of those cases myself in my life. it is still by and large the exception for that population because accepting being wrong/accepting change that goes against what you knew for a large chunk of your life is not something humans are conditioned to handle without resistance (thanks generational trauma), and for those one or two cases, i have maybe 20 or more other non-conservative family members who don't even realize they actually do hold conservative beliefs and oppose anything that goes against them or tries to make them see those particular beliefs are conservative.

This has absolutely been my experience lol. Any time I express disagreement with a relative who brings up politics, it's not a discussion, it's just them waiting for me to be done talking so they can tell me how wrong I am. Over and over and over. And then they don't seem to have any clue why I don't interact with them as much as I used to, and why it's so surface level. I'd love to have real conversations, where we're actually both open minded and able to consider other points of view, but they don't want to and I'm so tired of trying.

saw someone say one time that conservatives refuse to offer empathy and understanding yet demand it in spades. just about tracks
