Yeah they definitely did a good job with boiling frog'ing their user base to be complacent or even happpy about the change.

Im not going to roll over for it though because "that's just how it is". So personally, I've cancelled my sub, I may be a drop in a lake of money for them but whatever. I've dropped content that's shaped my life before for the way their companies go low effort for max cash (Pokemon, all the way from the original red and blue, now that's a drop in the ocean).

Fair enough. Hope you find something to scratch that itch. Mmos are all a den of bs cashgrabs anymore.

And I haven't found a game outside them that has welcoming and stable guilds. I wish there was something out there. But after a decade searching, I gave up.

DA

god, ain't that how it is on this bitch of a game genre. :c

it's really hard to find something in it that has substance and a decent community and some sort of fresh ideas. i think my last MMO that i had a long commitment time to was wakfu over a decade ago, and that got so, so fucking bad. the monetization so was wild, they even made it so that you can't participate in one of the main draws of the game if you don't pay for premium. that was a base f2p feature, and they took it away.

Anon quitting WoW for the mount here.

Oh my GOD Wakfu mention. Yes, I had a blast of a time with the community in that game, even when I was forced into the worst possible compatible timezone server (they determined everyone outside of the USA and its immediate neighbours go to the EU server even when I lived even further away from EU). I started losing interest when kamas started becoming a thing that dropped from mobs and quests which made the economy really weird and quit shortly after they added npc characters to use in your party. But man that game was such a good time prior to everything, I can easily imagine how it got much worse. Really shaped me too.

I saw Dofus was getting a big update and it's almost tempting just for the nostalgia.

I will say I had a good time in ESO for a bit, happened upon a super awesome guild that were a blast to hang out with. Maybe I'll go see if they're still kicking around.

Mostly though I got a lot of single player games to catch up with, and a few multiplayer option ones that I've left my friend rotting on because I got too sucked into WoW I can return to.

i'm a big fan of french media, and loved the first one and a half seasons of wakfu. huge fan, was on the ground floor when it was being translated on /a/ on 4chan back in the day.

i was in NA server year 1 or 2, and you dodged a bullet. PKers got into the player government in 2012 for 3 out of 4 of the nations via vote botting, but my nation somehow managed to vote an actually good member of the community for governor. as a result, the other three nations waged war on mine, and it was absolutely unplayable for MONTHS. the ecosystem of my nation was completely decimated by PKers who camped every area, and if you weren't in your haven bags, you were being hunted. it was a hellhole and devs did nothing.

that's when i quit, but i had sunk so many hours into the game on the professions alone: i had all 12 maxxed out at level 120, including fishing when the max level fish available was a level 40 resource. a functioning sandbox ecosystem is such a cool idea, and i'd love to see more of that in MMOs, but holy shit, you could write a book on how this game is a social experiment showcasing what happens when *eeeeveryone* has the power to impact an entire society.

Haha, wow. Yeah on the EU servers back then, Bonta and Amakna were pretty healthy and thriving. I was an Amaknian, and when we had voting happening it was always close races and little campaigns between two or three guild masters. I remember being in a role where I was in charge of ecosystem stuff for a while. Sufokia was "Sufokia who?". Largely abandoned, no one cared.

Now Brakmar, that was scary. That place was run by a group of Russian PKers, who marked practically everything as a crime. They'd hunt you down relentlessly if they found out another nation's people were on their soil. Heck, even other Brakmarians would get attacked if they weren't part of their crew. Going to Brakmar if we needed a dungeon or mob farm from there always felt like a terrifying infiltration mission lol.

YEP that sounds about like a good summary. especially for sufokia, land of the... i guess fishing, and a few dungeons. dungeons that weren't even fun to run or had good loot. i have to say, without it, i probably wouldn't have burned through level 40 to 120 fishing so peacefully. amakna and bonta always tended to be pretty amicable and friendly, and it was that way in nox server until the "Braknafokian War" (actually what it was called among players. what a name). i liked to go to amakna for grain farming before sitting at a chef station for 40 years cooking blonde loaves.

brakmar is always home to the edgelords and PKers no matter where you went; i sometimes played on the LATAM servers because i might not have understood them, but brazilians know how to have a damn good time, and brakmar was some sort of absolutely cracked group of tactical masterminds who practically solved the game. if a class or element was getting nerfed, they probably found some sort of exploit. i'm pretty sure the early fire cra nerf was from them, because good god they were capable of chaining those AoE totems like absolute legends with horrifying choreography.

Ayrt

25 years, I've been playing mmos. Before wow existed. I remember the old days, where there was no cashgrabs in games. I remember all the shit talking about the first cash mount. And people keep buying. I mean, if people used their heads, this wouldn't be a thing.

i want to return to ultima online.

half-jokes aside, i remember that, too. the days when AT MOST, all you worried about was making sure you had 5-9$ in your account so you could go to the store and buy a subscription card to play another month. i get that games get more expensive as more people play, but we lost something important the day it became normal for devs to release more premium shop updates than content updates.

i watch josh strife hayes and his "worst mmo ever" series, and it gets a sad little laugh out of me when he finds an abandoned MMO with a cash shop that isn't working, because he always points out that it's the true sign an MMO is dead: the cash shop isn't working, and hasn't worked for a while.

We really did. I missed the old days when we had the big three and we got more frequent content releases. Asheron's call and its monthly content patches. And no pay items.
