yep, these are my views for the most part.

to expand on your second point, and also because you called it to attention, Gryffs made themselves a really nice niche, and i feel like their success is closely tied to knowing their limits and keeping the scale of their site within reason (therefore keeping resources spent and workload low) and also having the invite system for SUCH a long time to make sure they could keep up with their limitations. the invite system also lead into the curation of a really sturdy community up until it came out of that invite system. the staff could interact with their community so much more closely by managing themselves incredibly well in these ways.

and for the third: cross site trading also encourages the players trading in order to get into the site in the first place to stick around longer, because they don't exactly have to start at zero.

for example: some people cash in quick on new site kickstarters for FR stuff because they never had the interest to play the site for the long run anyway; it's an investment to bulk up their own FR play. FR had a similar situation early in with its early backer items and other petsite trading! on top of that, in a kickstarter situation, the site already got the money it asked for in exchange for those item rewards, and it's not going to benefit from potential players not wanting to sign up because they missed the funding period and therefore their head start into the game, so those players who invest in KS items and then trade them for other petsite currency are actually helping the site get a good start on keeping a playerbase around by acting almost like a second chance.

the FR player gets stuff to play their game, the other site player gets stuff to start their game, just as you said. it's up to that other site to keep their playerbase's interest. that's how FR managed to come out the other side of the cross site trading just fine, and other sites can do it, too.

Yeah, I got in on gryffs during the first 'open registration' (I think) where you didn't need to be invited to join. It was still limited registration (it has now gone to fairly open registration)

I wouldn't have really kept at it, except a user was kind and gifted me 5 gryffs to start (in addition to the one I had) and I am glad I stayed.

The artist (the coder is usually not online as often) still will regularly interact with the player base.

And yeah, especially if a site does have limited/retiring items, the user will want to play the game during that time period in order to collect those items so that maybe in the future they will be worth trading.

i heard about their transition to the more open registration; i'm pretty proud of them for going into that! they were invite-only for SO LONG that i didn't think they'd ever come out of it, but it's really cool that they decided to pull that trigger. i remember talking to the artist a lot because i was going to order a custom item, but i ended up getting screwed financially out of it, though i don't regret the opportunity to get to talk with them. the team has a very clear passion for their site and the work ethic to keep it going.

gryffs strongly benefits from its incredibly gracious community; its playerbase hasn't gotten to that cynical or elitist phase a lot of invite-only petsites tend to, and the generosity and helpful attitude makes it such an approachable scene to get involved in. the players really know that they have the power to keep people playing, even if the game is basic. across the years, i don't think i've ever met a single unpleasant person on there, even in its most rambunctious of times. it's a real gem; while i might not get on there often, i always feel welcomed coming back, and i'm always able to catch up to speed on new things thanks to the guidance of its players.

That sucks that you ended up getting screwed out of your custom item (may I ask if it were the site's fault, or something else? Just curious)

Not sure when the last time you were on (a lot of older players have come back recently) but there have been a LOT of changes recently. The meadow got an update, both visually and item wise, you can now put multiple copies of the same item on the same gryff, we have multiple themes to use, custom item shop, player shops, inventory got an overhaul, there is even a token shop (to sell tokens) and a way to search player shops.

But yeah, I think a lot of the reason why people stick around is because of the community. I love it and the customization, I love making scenes.

The open registration isn't quite complete open registration (there is still an limit on the number of accounts that can be made, but that number is pretty large)

oh, it was personal finances; definitely a me thing and not the site's fault! the artist was nothing but gracious about me having to bow out.

i got on the other day you posted, because it reminded me i should check in, and i did see all the changes! i'm going to take some time after thundercrack to look at the changes before warrior's way in 6 days and see what all's different without pressure of making sure i make the most of coli. :D

Yeah, that does suck.

Though, if you still want a custom item, the artist does open custom items as bonuses for purchasing tokens (it isn't open now, because he has a backlog), so you can get some custom items in the future.

If you need help, I am Tavin over there, just post in chat or PM me (I wander in and out, so might not see chat)
