I can't speak on Lio/wolvden. But can we also talk about the colorwheel and breeding? I've played some other breeding games (a gryphon one... Gryffs? and FelisFire namely) that have a kinda similar gene inheritance system and the pets don't necessarily die so much as age out of breeding.... but their color systems were just such ass I had to stop playing because breeding was only giving ugly dirty dishwater versions of the colors because those games use a hexcode based system where a majority of the colors you will get are de-saturated muddy greys.

I'm not surprised Lorwolf borrowed the strict wheel idea from FR, it works! It's so much better than hexes.

Sylestia has that dishwasher colors problem too, you have to know what you are doing to get pretty offspring

My daydream "if I ever made a petsite" wish is where you breed for hue, but saturation and lightness can be changed with sliders or food items. The breeding rainbow math becomes much easier that way.

if you don't play it already, there's a mobile tamagotchi-like game called "livly island" where you can do exactly the latter: your animal companions change colour based on food you feed them utilizing the RBG colour scale, and you can change them at any time incrementally using food so long as they're hungry! there's also white/black foods that let you change saturation. you might enjoy the game a little, or it might inspire you if you DO decide to work on a game!

Thank you for the rec! The art looks really stunning. I got a few limited pets because their anniversary is on right now.

Wheels are good if the color selection is good, which I think lorwolf fails spectacularly at despite also having significantly more of them. I think for a wheel system FR is as good as it gets.

Lmao I know right? I saw the genes and colours system on Lorwolf and realized instantly that it was gonna be so much harder to work with than FR's, despite being functionally same.

Like first of all, the wolves have no dedicated "primary" and "secondary" areas which separate two colours from each other without any overlaps. You got the base colour and, three entire pattern types gotta go on top of it. Even just trying to design my starter wolves I got so frustrated with how hard it was to make something that looked good without having to 1) choose the same or similar colour for multiple slots; 2) use black and white and 3) stick to natural colours because many of the bright rainbow ones just look off in general.

I haven't played it for like a year so idk what updates the game has got but from what I can tell, if you don't want to go the custom apparel route then collecting really good looking wolves just seems annoying as hell? What looks good is subjective of course, but idk I just didn't feel like bothering. Makes FR breeding project planning look like a walk in the park.

Of course I could be wrong because I never attempted any projects on Lorwolf, maybe they're piss easy I dunno I'm not very interested in going back

IK people on FR have been asking for quaternary genes but personally I think we got it good with just three colour slots.

I don't know about quaternary genes, because I could see that getting insanely busy, but I wonder if they could make tert genes apply to the quaternary color -- essentially make it so you have a choice of terts. That could save a lot of color combos.

I'd be into quaternary genes if they were basically just a second tert or EXTREMELY subtle in coverage. Paw Borough is kind of doing this, with the caveat that the undercoat slot is just a solid color with no patterning, much to my disappointment as someone who had been following that project since before the Kickstarter.

I honestly haven't tried any breeding projects with Lorwolf's system, I don't like wolves enough to actually care, but I have tinkered a little making pairs with what wolves I can get off the market and.... It's alright. Like I said, I didn't say Lorwolf's wheel was *good* I just said I'm not surprised that they HAVE a wheel because hex systems suck absolute ass. lol Their shitty wheel is miles better than those imo. lol
