Does anyone else find their appropriation of labor movement terminology to be kind of uncomfortable?

Re: Skin makers go on strike

yeah, and it was definitely for the sake of baiting clicks despite their claims to the contrary

they knew what they were doing: briefly mentioning the rule-breaking skins that were grandfathered in, how some skin makers get a pass for breaking rules that only exist for others without getting into the suspicions of favoritism that circle around, showing how apparel and genes go harder in the "implied suffering is a no no" rule when skins are holder to higher standards, etc.

Just like you know what you’re doing with deliberately trying to stir and derail things up? Stop sucking the staff off people have a right to want things to be clearer.

Sir, this is a drama site.

I actually agree with the thread maker!

I meant more like they chose their words (including the problematic go on strike theme) and their arguments very, very strategically to get the most eyes on their thread

AND that they knew very well how to skillfully talk around certain topics like for example whatwastheirname that got several skincents accepted that other people wouldn't presumably because they also did art for the site, which the more hardcore skincent fanbase would know because it was talked about extensively off-site

they knew what they were doing, it was just the right amount of incendiary for the sake of accomplishing what they want in getting people to read the topic and spread around support while maintaining plausible deniability on-site

No, technically they are striking. But I doubt anything will happen.

Deciding to not participate in a hobby but still use the site anyways is not a strike in any sense of the word. The word of course also only applies to workers striking their employers, typically for better treatment of their persons... which is a big difference.

Re: Skin makers go on strike

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
no because their use of strike in this context doesn't hurt workers who are striking. go tell the people at the john deere or kellogg's factory that their cause is going to be hindered by someone on an online pet game using the word strike to describe something they're doing and see what if they're concerned lol.

Their use of the words strike and unionization in this context is flat out incorrect. This wouldn't be a big deal if it weren't for the fact that FR is populated by underage kids that are now getting false impressions of the word. But more than anything else, as was previously stated by others, it is cringe.

Re: Skin makers go on strike

Agree. Americans especially are ignorant about labor, by design but most won’t educate themselves. While it doesn’t harm striking workers directly, appropriating the lingo to describe confusion over the rules of a pet sim does perpetuate the ignorance.

also it IS just incredibly cringe

I hope you have the same energy for Lightning's corporate exploitation, 'Stormbringer is a bad boss', the entire flight is about toxic capitalism trope. Otherwise this is such a needlessly petty nitpick. Don't you have better things to be doing?

I am going to borrow from someone else in this thread:

Sir, this is a drama site. Needlessly petty nitpicking is why this exists

I wouldn't be surprised if at least part of the reason the thread got deleted is because they framed it so politically now that I think about it.

Re: Skin makers go on strike

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think that it was a lot of things. It was a petition encouraging bombarding the staff with needless tickets. It was discussing rules in a very confrontational way and they were being horribly hostile to anyone daring to disagree(I will not be shocked if some of these people build a list of those who dared disagree to blacklist. There's a reason I won't say anything with a name attached. I like buying accents, and would rather keep being able to buy them.)

But the worst part, in my opinion, is that they were using and discussing works in the thread of people that weren't involved past having a vaguely similar concept approves. Public callouts. And no, if you bring the image of the skin in, hiding the artists name doesn't absolve you of that.

The political tone was really the least of it.

I mean, technically the body of the actual thread (aside from the title & header meme) doesn't mention striking/unionizing at all, and the portion of the thread that mentions some artists stopping skin submissions for the month frames it more as a boycott & a way to reduce strain on the skin moderators temporarily. I agree with someone else upthread that the title & header are just meant to draw attention - I guess we can argue about whether it's ethical to meme on unionizing in general then? But I feel like that ship has sailed a bit with how many 'eat the rich,' 'when the communist revolution happens,' etc jokes have been prevalent on the internet in the past few years.

What I find way more aggravating is the handful of people in AAA (and elsewhere I imagine, because the FR userbase is like this) saying "literally 1984" and fearmongering about getting suspended/locked/etc. Especially the comment about staff "gunning after the escapees." Weird staff comparisons are nothing new to FR ofc, but some people have shockingly bad taste imo.

+1, those comments were embarrassingly tone deaf.

These are so unintentionally funny. I'm glad these people were able to stay halfway reasonable onsite but man it gets hilarious when their unvarnished takes come out.

okay i'm ngl, i thought the anons above complaining about the use of the word strike were being silly. but seeing people compare this to union busting and 1984 and uh, saying staff is "gunning down the escapees" (what?!) has made me reconsider my stance. holy shit.
