I wonder whether the rolls for each individual pickaxe/shared note are equally weighted across all uncovered plots for the entire digsite - or if it rolls 1-16 to see which plot gets worked on then rolls for squares within that plot.
Going by how seldom my closest-to-completed plot gets hit (one of the fams - I used a bunch of magnifying glasses on it the first couple days before it became clear that wasn't strategically ideal), I'm guessing the former. If they shifted it to the latter - and let the userbase know about it - I think it would ease some of the frustration the feature seems to be causing, particularly on the topic of forced-reset plots. (A just-completed and now completely uncovered plot is much more likely to get hit than one you're three squares away from finishing, by the former method, whereas by the latter it wouldn't have as big an impact.)
I sure hope it's based on tiles and not plots. If it were just tiles, then it's fewer calculations to strategically reason about whether or not a pickaxe is worth using in the current situation. I don't expect the devs to be forthcoming about how the probabilities work. Have there been any organized player attempts to start recording data on this? It would be nice to get an idea.

purely anecdotal, but i uncovered both gene plots back to back, and since then used like 16+ pickaxes (and a couple magnifying glasses for fams with 1-2 tiles left). i've uncovered 6 tiles on one gene, and 7 on another. so with that VERY anecdotal (and incomplete) data... seems pretty evenly distributed? lol
