Re: Member Ages

i was never sure why you guys believe anyone on the internet when it comes to age.

1. its ableist as fuck to assume because they're older, they have the cognitive ability of someone that age. someone can be 22 and have the developmental ability of a 10 year old. they may be on the autistic spectrum. they might have a brain injury. it could be literally anything?

and

2. it could be a kid that is lying about their age. cmon now everyone here is guilty or knows of someone who clicked that "yes I'm 18+" when they definitely were not. there are lots of kids on flightrising who say they are older to avoid COPPA laws as well.

Lair/Den size increases

Am I too cynical because whenever I read things like 'the devs will give us extra space as soon as they're sure the servers can handle it!' arguments in more-space-begging suggestion threads, I just have to laugh?

I get that server concerns are the reason space isn't just infinite now and forever, but I have a hard time thinking that they make it a priority to run serious analytics (X active users currently maxed out and with enough t/g reserves to hit the new cap ASAP, Y average number of users maxing on a monthly basis, so projecting they would also work towards new caps, extrapolate over time) etc etc, rather than occasionally vaguely remembering 'Oh yeah, more space is a thing people want' and dribbling out another few slots.

Re: Lair/Den size increases

(Anonymous) 2021-11-08 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I don't think they even care about how many people hit the cap, nor how many have the treasure reserves to max, nor how many on average max. It doesn't honestly matter. I have the feeling, that if they do think about it, they look at how the server is handling things NOW, and then go 'hmm, if we add more slots, how badly will it adversely affect the servers'.

Because they can't just go 'oh, only about 40% of players will ever max out slots, so we can raise the cap.' There will always be people who don't max, but that doesn't mean that it will always be only 40% of the players, so they have to plan for 'worse case scenarios' of the majority of players maxing out, and act accordingly. Or at least they should.

Also, as time goes by, that 40% of players, while staying static as a percentage maybe, still means even more and more active accounts who have maxed out their lairs. 40% of 10 accounts is 4 accounts. 40% of 100 accounts is 40 accounts.

So, no it isn't 'serious analytics' but just general 'okay our servers are doing good, we can have a new lair cap!'

I always tend to take ages with a grain of salt, and treat people based on how they act. They act mature, who cares if they say they are 13. If they don't, I don't care if they are supposed to be 100, they are still acting immaturely.

This is why I hate it when people go 'have you ever thought they are 15! they are just a KID!' or 'I bet they are 13' when someone brings up a player who is being annoying or actively doing something against the rules.

Like FDS, everyone was like 'oh they are just a kid' and got really upset when they were locked for spam. (and understandably upset that maybe they weren't allowed to role play out side of the correct forums). Then it came out that FDS had deliberately manipulated the screenshot to say spamming, when they were actually banned for multiaccounting, and suddenly there were no more 'but he is just a kid!' when his antics were brought up.

For one, I don't believe that being young is an excuse or 'get out of trouble free card' when it comes to some things (some things are more understandable when the people are young, whether physically or mentally, and harassment is never okay, period.), and I also don't automatically believe it when someone says they are 'x' just to get a pass on something. Whether it be age, mental illness, physical ability etc..

NAYRT, but if I shrug someone off as a kid, it's not because I think it's an excuse for their behaviour so much as I don't want to be the kind of person who yells at children on the Internet. They may well be still in the wrong, but it's just not my business.

Most of the time, these people aren't 'yelling at children' but rather complaining about it on blogs like DR and the Saltmines, and here. Many times, these people haven't even posted on site to the person in question, they just want to vent.

To me, I think the issue is that the 'but they might be a *kid*!' sounds a bit too close to 'kids will be kids' that is often used to excuse behavior that SHOULD be stopped.

Also, as an aside, I thought I once found a place that said, but can't find it now, but what do the acronyms NAYRT and the like mean (I am pretty sure they are about replying and identifying people, but acronyms and me? Not friendly at all)

Thank you, I knew OP, but Nayrt and Ayrt always throw me for a loop trying to figure out what they meant. (I could guess that YRT was you replied to, but the first letter or two didn't make sense)

Here's a reverse situation: ever forget why you had someone blocked, curiously unblock them to see one of their posts and immediately realize why you had them blocked? Well, just had that happen.

Yea. It's kind of funny. Especially when you realize: Oh, you're that obnoxious spammer.

I don't have many pics of him to be honest! He's a sassy lil thing until you go to take him out of his cage or bring forth the phone to snap a shot or two.
He does love his greens, I've had budgies who would be very picky, but my lil man 'tiel will go wild if I as much as open the fridge to grab him some fresh greens.

Also obligatory, cockatiels exist only to yell, my bird is no different lol

And another thing is that if a player maxes their lair space, fills it with dragons, and then goes inactive, those dragons will sit on the server forever. Even if they never raise the cap, the total volume of dragons will be continually increase as new players arrive and old lairs full of dragons go inactive.

Re: Lair/Den size increases

(Anonymous) 2021-11-10 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Also... I'm pretty sure the site doesn't delete a lot of the data on dragons. You can get full hover details like age and stuff on dragons exalted over 5 years ago.

Then again, depending on how they do the data, it may not take much room there.

Re: Lair/Den size increases

(Anonymous) 2021-11-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I think I have heard that it isn't exalted/dragons on inactive accounts that are really an issue, but the health ticks on active dragons.

So, more space for active dragons = more load on the site, not just more space in general.

Re: Lair/Den size increases

(Anonymous) 2021-11-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
op

On that front, what I think I've heard most often is that it's about more about hunger tickdowns than sheer dragon data volume. (As the other poster mentioned, nearly all data is kept on exalted dragons too, only the bios get scrubbed, and more space doesn't directly translate to more dragons being created on a regular basis (that would be extra nests).)

So I don't know if already-starving dragons specifically and/or inactive accounts (which can be assumed to always have starving dragons unless there's recently been a sitewide feed) put any additional load on the server at those times.

But yes, that's another point; it's much more common and lower stakes for a new person to arrive and fill up as many spaces as they cheaply can with pretty dragons, whether they subsequently stick around or get bored never log in again, than for a user who's already sunk tens of millions in treasure for full expansion to get an additional five spaces. And since there's no mechanism to control the former, it seems a bit odd to get hung up on the latter.

Re: Lair/Den size increases

(Anonymous) 2021-11-10 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
op again

I wonder if it would ever be feasible to replace thrice-daily tickdowns with simply losing three points every rollover. Because yeah, if starving dragons 'count' even if they can't tick down any further, the possibility of new account creation means active dragon volume can only ever grow, whether the cap is raised or not. So shifting tickdowns to when the site is inactive anyway might help if there ever starts to be lag at the other two times.

You ever buy a dragon, name it something bizarre then go... I wonder what the owner of the parents think of that name in their serious offspring list.
