anyone else feel weird about "wild spirit crafts" and the use of a dreamcatcher? I don't want to assume the creators have no association with any native american groups but it comes across to me as some boho "wild g*psy spirit" white person kind of thing
Yeah but it could also be a thin wreath maybe and with the tree in the middle it gets a bit further from dreamcatcher in looks: https://serapphire.tumblr.com/post/151478880161/do-you-know-of-any-alternatives-to-a-dream
literally said I didn't want to make any assumptions so idk where you got the idea that I was doing so
why is the response to "can we talk about this thing?" to tell me to go outside? why do you seem so exasperated? I realize I can't expect a lack of hostility on an anon comm but jeeze
I asked because I've seen a number of native american crafters discuss how people will sell dreamcatchers and use their aesthetics for profit without supporting native american crafters or culture
I don't think it is. OP seems sincere to me and I hadn't heard of Nature's foddart using dreamcatchers before because I don't play in those areas of the game. Personally I squint at dreamcatchers used randomly as a crunchy granola motif because they do have specific cultural meanings. Usually they're in non-Native art at the cost of those meanings being ignored, like dreamcatcher tattoos for example.
FTR I haven't seen the art in question and I would love a link to it if anyone has one.
it reads as appropriative/disrespectful to me but I didn't want to write them off immediately so I wanted to initiate a discussion and see if other people had additional input or felt the same way I did, but I didn't want to attach my name to it in case people dogpiled me for asking a question, since I have been followed across websites for expressing even lukewarm takes
I don't know how you want me to word it? but I am asking you not to take my question in bad faith
Because the way original post was worded, it looked like you were looking for support of your take, not discussion about it.
"Hey guys, does this seem wrong/appropriative?" has different tone than including "some boho "wild g*psy spirit" white person". Expecting polite conversatiin after starting it like that on an anon com when you were the one perceeved as hostile first will result in exactly this.
Many Natives have said it's fine for non-natives to use them, it's just best to leave the actual creation of them to Native folks that have them in their culture.
That being said, I personally see more of a "less hostile" Blair Witch/wickerman vibe, myself.
man you're a lot more passionate about this than I am from the sounds of it. why the hostility when I brought up a topic for discussion? you can just say no?
I haven't seen every single thread out there, this is the first time I've seen this foddart
lmfao imagine declaring that you're "sick" because someone else just noticed a thing you've known about for a while... I don't believe you're at all sincere about this
