Re: """helpful art pricing"""
(Anonymous) 2020-09-30 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)I haven't done real art, but I used to make graphics and icons on LJ way back in the day. When I first started, it would take me forever to do things. Both because I wasn't aware of how exactly to use all of the tools in Photoshop and because I wasn't aware of what would look good, so I had to keep experimenting. Fast forward a few years, and I could crank out good (If unoriginal) icons in just a couple of minutes, because I was much more knowledgeable.
So should I have been paid $5 an icon for my not-so-great beginner icons that took forever, but $.33 each for my good looking advanced icons that took much less time? That doesn't seem a fair way to compensate for the experience and competency I gained. Nor does it seem fair for a buyer to pay that price for my beginner work that definitely wasn't worth it, even if I had spent that time on it.
Although I don't do real art, I would think that would carry over there. I feel that someone more experienced would very likely be able to produce something that looks good in less time than someone less experienced. And basing the price on time spent might not be the best way to go about it.
