I've been to plenty of countries myself and have only had to interact with police in one of them. I think the problem here may be you.

get back to me when you find yourself walking innocently on a sidewalk in a metropolitan city (not in north america or europe) and get stopped by police because they see an easy mark to extort money from :)

dude I am so sorry. It doesnt help that Japan has such a "super chill and uber polite" reputation when it has plenty of dark underbelly itself that people just dont seem to talk about

They just do a great job with their public image. Japan is still incredibly socially conservative, has a terrible work culture and attitude towards mental health, and is extremely expensive to live in, among other issues. The image that anime and cute mascots and aesthetic blogs give Japan isn't really representative, and I always feel bad for people (especially Americans) who move there expecting a wonderland. (That's not to say that Japan hasn't done things right, but. Y'know. Nuance.)

Oh yeah definitely, especially with the super deadly combo of their attitudes towards their own work culture and mental health which leads to many suicides. They have such a blind eye towards people getting crunched under those expectations. I am not saying other countries are perfect though, of course.

I agree also that I think Japan is still worth visiting at least. I just hope people do their research before doing so.
