They just do a great job with their public image. Japan is still incredibly socially conservative, has a terrible work culture and attitude towards mental health, and is extremely expensive to live in, among other issues. The image that anime and cute mascots and aesthetic blogs give Japan isn't really representative, and I always feel bad for people (especially Americans) who move there expecting a wonderland. (That's not to say that Japan hasn't done things right, but. Y'know. Nuance.)

on a similar note, for some reason people forget that Japan was a part of the Axis Powers alongside Germany and Italy during WWII.

Oh yeah definitely, especially with the super deadly combo of their attitudes towards their own work culture and mental health which leads to many suicides. They have such a blind eye towards people getting crunched under those expectations. I am not saying other countries are perfect though, of course.

I agree also that I think Japan is still worth visiting at least. I just hope people do their research before doing so.

How exactly is Japan a country worth visiting? Everything you find there you can find something better in a different country without so much xenophobia. Pass.
