i think they're probably planning to do exactly that. Light's cerdae is based on a deer (white-tailed deer i think?) so i'd imagine they're going to pick different thematic hooved animals/ungulates for all these flight cerdae.
anon. ALL cerdae are based on deer at least partially. that's where the name "cerdae" comes from. (cervidae)
unicorns are generally a mix of horse and deer anatomy, particularly with older depictions with cloven hooves and thinner limbs (this is also what's used in the iconic the last unicorn), and FR leans into that version of them.
ayrt and dude i don't need you to "Um Actually" me about the etymology of cerdae and what unicorns traditionally are.
i'm saying FR usually plays fast and loose with what a mythological creature usually is and that's likely to carry over into their fest theme. the griffins are proof of this because none of them were true lion/eagle hybrids like a griffin was originally and only a couple of them even used felidae and/or birds of prey in them.
and fr's definition of cerdae is already very obviously just "unicorn" because of the former qiriqs and the fact that the "wetlands unicorn" is the twin of a familiar called a "cerdae".
so given all of that it seems very possible that if the familiar theme this year is indeed "unicorn/cerdae" they might stretch that interpretation of what is a unicorn to make some fun and unique flight-themed familiars?
what i'd like to know is why are you coming in here trying to be the Smartest Person in the room by dumping on everybody's fun theorizing about potential designs?
the honest answer is because I'm a big unicorn fan but in the specific context of deer-like unicorns, so going, "have I mentioned lately that the Classic Unicorn is deer-like" is a personal pet cause, okok. (and as a result I'd be nothing but thrilled if all the fest familiars this year were at least a bit deer-like, though I think the more likely outcome is indeed more like what we saw with the gryphons.)
I intended my comment to come off as more like friendly ribbing though. maybe gentle exasperation at worst.
ayrt fair. if we end up with various species of deer kinda like the snake fest fams, that'd be fine i guess but it's just way more fun to me to theorize about different ungulates being a possible base for the fest fams than just "what if deer but goopy?" or "what if deer but skeleton"?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-02 03:39 am (UTC)(link)As someone whose entire aesthetic is about bones and antlers, I would absolutely a "deer but bones" but I'd also love to see weird takes on unicorns.
Example being a rhino for Earth, or a narwhal for Water, but with some Elemental flair
