Active player count has always been a little over 1000 with the rest being bots and crawlers. The bot count has skyrocketed in recent years due to all the AI scrapers being unleashed on the web, and FR's guest counter is particularly sensitive to this, making it extra visible. Actual player counts have been pretty steady for years now.
