ayrt i don't know which add-ons are the preferred ones now but as an example, past add-ons that created make-shift "dark mode" often still ran into issues with site images because they were on a white square background instead of being transparent. so you'd still end up blinded by certain image-heavy pages.

converting site images and media to not do that was definitely part of the refactor and in fact it might be better now for dark mode add-ons because of that.

this is ignoring what was needed at the code level in order for things to play nicely with each other, including allowing for player's using non-rule breaking custom add-ons. fr is an old site by internet standards and untangling code can be and usually is a nightmare game of Yeti in my Spaghetti.

another answer is that one player's preferred dark mode may be headache inducing to another player who wants a dark-but-not-that-dark mode and i personally suspect fr wants to launch a few different site skin options at the same time as "dark mode" so as to cover all bases and to not just stick players with choosing between "match in a cave" dark mode and "second coming of jesus" light mode. especially because their playerbase throws a fit if they feel "left out" by an update. making multiple site skins in this instance would therefore take additional time.

That last part is so important.

Another site I play updated their site a few years ago and gave us site themes. There were a lot of them.

My personal favorite is a dark one with blue highlights and it is basically all blue with a bit of green.

To me, it is perfect and soothing.

But it gives others headaches because it does have some brighter blue and green.

There is another one that is pretty much universally dark, but everything is shades of brown. I know others who love that one, because it is soothing to them, but I don't like how washed out it makes things.

Others prefer brighter themes because the darker ones give THEM headaches.

So many sites that give dark mode do tend to go 'oh lets go all dark greys and depressing' or 'everything but text is black', I really appreciate the ones that give me options to choose from.

ayrt same hat basically

the dark mode most commercial websites/apps default to is awful for me because bright text on a dark background makes me see actual lines in my vision after awhile and gives me a headache on top of it.

it's incredibly annoying and i 100% avoid nearly any website with a layout like that (like most Fandom Wikis lol) and will just deal with light mode on other sites because at least i can mitigate the brightness by turning it down on my device or straight up wearing sunglasses.

my personal sweet spot tends to be backgrounds with medium-to-light cool colors (especially blues/greens) and off-dark text.
